Metal 4 Argument Tables
I am puzzled by the setAddress(_:attributeStride:index:) of MTL4ArgumentTable. Can anyone please explain what the attributeStride parameter is for? The doc says that it is "The stride between attributes in the buffer." but why? Who uses this for what? On the C++ side in the shaders the stride is determined by the C++ type, as far as I know. What am I missing here? Thanks!

HidHide on MacOS
I was wondering if there's a method on MacOS to have my application hide a hid device such as a game controller and instead have the receiving game/application see my app's virtual controller? Is this possible via DriverKit or some other form of kernel level coding? On Windows we have a tool known as HidHide that hids a game controller from all other applications. Is it possible to implement such behavior into an app or is that system level?

SceneKit - different behavior when debugging
Hello, I'm currently working on my first SceneKit game and have encountered an issue related to moving an SCNNode using a UIPanGestureRecognizer. When I deploy the game to my iPhone via Xcode in debug mode, all interactions are smooth. However, when I stop the debugging session and run the game directly from the device (outside of Xcode), the SCNNode movement behaves inconsistently — it works sometimes smoothly and sometimes not and the interaction becomes choppy. The SCNNode movement is controlled using a UIPanGestureRecognizer. Do you have any ideas what might be causing the issue?

Race conditions when changing CAMetalLayer.drawableSize?
Is the pseudocode below thread-safe? Imagine that the Main thread sets the CAMetalLayer's drawableSize to a new size meanwhile the rendering thread is in the middle of rendering into an existing MTLDrawable which does still have the old size. Is the change of metalLayer.drawableSize thread-safe in the sense that I can present an old MTLDrawable which has a different resolution than the current value of metalLayer.drawableSize? I assume that setting the drawableSize property informs Metal that the next MTLDrawable offered by the CAMetalLayer should have the new size, right? Is it valid to assume that "metalLayer.drawableSize = newSize" and "metalLayer.nextDrawable()" are internally synchronized, so it cannot happen that metalLayer.nextDrawable() would produce e.g. a MTLDrawable with the old width but with the new height (or a completely invalid resolution due to potential race conditions)? func onWindowResized(newSize: CGSize) { // Called on the Main thread metalLayer.drawableSize = newSize } func onVsync(drawable: MTLDrawable) { // Called on a background rendering thread renderer.renderInto(drawable: drawable) }

NSScreen's maximumExtendedDynamicRangeColorComponentValue does not seem to provide the proper value after sleep/wake on third party HDR displays even when there is EDR content on screen in macOS Tahoe
The maximumExtendedDynamicRangeColorComponentValue should provide some value between 1.0 and maximumPotentialExtendedDynamicRangeColorComponentValue depending on the available EDR headroom if there is any content on-screen that uses EDR. This works fine in most scenarios but in macOS 26 Tahoe (including in 26.2) this seemingly breaks down when a third party external display is in HDR mode and the Mac goes to sleep and wakes up. After wake only a value of 1.0 is provided by the third party external display's NSScreen object, no matter what (although when the SDR peak brightness is being changed using the brightness slider, didChangeScreenParametersNotification is firing and the system should provide a proper updated headroom value). This makes dynamic tone-mapping that adapts to actual screen brightness impossible. Everything works fine in Sequoia. In Tahoe the user needs to turn off HDR, then go through a sleep/wake cycle and turn HDR back on to have this fixed, which is obviously not a sustainable workaround.

Present GameCentre Overlay Programmatically
As GKGameCenterViewController has been deprecated, it seems that GKAccessPoint is now the correct way to present the GameCentre leaderboard. But the placement options for the GKAccessPoint are very limited and lead to misaligned UI that looks clunky, as the GKAccessPoint does not align with the system navigation toolbar. Am I missing something here or am I just stuck with a lopsided UI now? I much preferred how this previously worked, where I could present the GKGameCenterViewController in a sheet from my own button

Firebase not initializing in iOS Unreal Engine 5.6 app (using MetaHuman + FirebaseFeatures)
Hi everyone, I'm building a native iOS app using Unreal Engine 5.6 with Firebase for authentication and Firestore. The app uses a MetaHuman avatar and is meant to run as a standalone UE app on iPhone. I'm using this Firebase wrapper: 👉 https://pandoa.github.io/FirebaseFeatures/ I've followed all the steps, including: Adding GoogleService-Info.plist to the Xcode project and ensuring it’s in the correct target Calling FIRApp.configure() in AppDelegate Verifying the plist is bundled correctly However, the app crashes on launch, and Firebase does not initialize properly. Crash log shows: [FirebaseCore][I-COR000005] No app has been configured yet. Setup details: Unreal Engine: 5.6 (source build, macOS) iOS Deployment: 17.5 MetaHuman character packaged correctly and app launches fine without Firebase Has anyone here managed to get Firebase working inside a native Unreal Engine iOS app with this setup? I'd love to hear if there’s something I’m missing — maybe something with initialization timing or module loading? Thanks so much in advance 🙏

Request low-latency streaming for iOS/iPadOS
Just found out this key available for visionOS https://aninterestingwebsite.com/documentation/bundleresources/entitlements/com.apple.developer.low-latency-streaming It seems to keep video streaming from being interrupted by AWDL, our community needs it badly for self-hosted game streaming (PC to iPhone / iPad). Related apps: Moonlight / VoidLink / SteamLink. Can we expect this on iOS/iPadOS 26, or even iOS/iPadOS 18 ?

Game Porting Toolkit installation fails: CMake compatibility error in game-porting-toolkit-compiler
I'm encountering a build failure when trying to install the Game Porting Toolkit via Homebrew. The installation fails during the game-porting-toolkit-compiler dependency build phase with a CMake compatibility error. Error Message: CMake Error at CMakeLists.txt:3 (cmake_minimum_required): Compatibility with CMake < 3.5 has been removed from CMake. Update the VERSION argument <min> value. Or, use the <min>...<max> syntax to tell CMake that the project requires at least <min> but has been updated to work with policies introduced by <max> or earlier. Or, add -DCMAKE_POLICY_VERSION_MINIMUM=3.5 to try configuring anyway. -- Configuring incomplete, errors occurred! Environment: macOS: 15.6.1 (Sequoia) Homebrew: 5.0.1 CMake: 3.20.2 Architecture: x86_64 (via Rosetta) Formula: apple/apple/game-porting-toolkit-compiler v0.1 Source: crossover-sources-22.1.1.tar.gz Steps to Reproduce: Install x86_64 Homebrew for Rosetta compatibility Run: arch -x86_64 /usr/local/bin/brew install apple/apple/game-porting-toolkit Build fails during dependency installation Root Cause: The LLVM/Clang sources included in crossover-sources-22.1.1.tar.gz contain a CMakeLists.txt file that specifies a minimum CMake version lower than 3.5. Modern CMake versions (3.5+) have removed backward compatibility with these older version requirements. Potential Solutions: Update the Homebrew formula to patch the CMakeLists.txt with cmake_minimum_required(VERSION 3.5) or higher Update to newer CrossOver sources with updated CMake requirements Add the -DCMAKE_POLICY_VERSION_MINIMUM=3.5 flag to the CMake build command in the formula Is this a known issue? Are there plans to update the formula or the source package to resolve this compatibility problem? Any guidance on a workaround would be appreciated. Full log available at: /Users/kentarovadney/Library/Logs/Homebrew/game-porting-toolkit-compiler/02.cmake.log Thanks for any assistance!

Metal 4: Proper usage of requestResidency() with unique per-frame textures at 120fps
Hello, I have some confusion regarding ResidencySet. Specifically, about the requestResidency() function: how often should we call it? I have a captureOutput(_:didOutput:from:) method that is triggered at 60 or 120 fps. Inside this method, I am calling the following code every frame: computeResidencySet.removeAllAllocations() сomputeResidencySet.addAllocation(TextureA) computeResidencySet.addAllocation(TextureB) computeResidencySet.addAllocation(TextureC) computeResidencySet.commit() computeResidencySet.requestResidency() // Should we call it every frame? Please keep in mind that TextureA, TextureB, and TextureC are unique for each call (new instances are provided on every frame)."

Trouble with MDLMesh.newBox()
I'm trying to build an MDLMesh then add normals let mdlMesh = MDLMesh.newBox(withDimensions: SIMD3<Float>(1, 1, 1), segments: SIMD3<UInt32>(2, 2, 2), geometryType: MDLGeometryType.triangles, inwardNormals:false, allocator: allocator) mdlMesh.addNormals(withAttributeNamed: MDLVertexAttributeNormal, creaseThreshold: 0) When I render the mesh, some normals are (0,0,0). I don't know if the problem is in the mesh, or in the conversion to MTKMesh. Is there a way to examine an MDLMesh with the geometry viewer? When I look at the variable values for my mdlMesh I get this: Not too useful. I don't know how to track down the normals. What's the best way to find out where the normals getting broken?

How to Configure angularLimitInYZ for PhysicsSphericalJoint in RealityKit (Pendulum/Swing Behavior)
Hello RealityKit developers, I'm currently working on physics simulations in my visionOS app and am trying to adapt the concepts from the official sample Simulating physics joints in your RealityKit app. In the sample, a sphere is connected to the ceiling using a PhysicsRevoluteJoint to create a hinge-like simulation. I've successfully modified this setup to use a PhysicsSphericalJoint instead. The basic replacement works as expected: pin1 (attached to the sphere) rotates freely around pin0 (attached to the ceiling), much like a ball-and-socket joint should, removing all translational degrees of freedom. My challenge lies with the PhysicsSphericalJoint's angularLimitInYZ property. The documentation mentions that this property allows limiting the rotation around the Y and Z axes, defining an "elliptical cone shape around the x-axis of pin0." However, I'm struggling to understand how to specify these values to achieve a desired rotational limit. If I have a sphere that is currently capable of rotating 360 degrees around pin0 (like a free-spinning ball on a string), how would I use angularLimitInYZ to restrict its rotation to a certain height or angular range, preventing it from completing a full circle? Specifically, I'm trying to achieve a "swing" like behavior where the sphere oscillates back and forth but cannot rotate completely overhead or underfoot. What values or approach should I use for the angularLimitInYZ tuple to define such a restricted pendulum-like motion? Any insights, code examples, or explanations on how to properly configure angularLimitInYZ for this kind of behavior would be incredibly helpful! The following code is modified from the sample. extension MainView { func addPinsTo(ballEntity: Entity, attachmentEntity: Entity) throws { let hingeOrientation = simd_quatf(from: [1, 0, 0], to: [0, 0, 1]) let attachmentPin = attachmentEntity.pins.set( named: "attachment_hinge", position: .zero, orientation: hingeOrientation ) let relativeJointLocation = attachmentEntity.position( relativeTo: ballEntity ) let ballPin = ballEntity.pins.set( named: "ball_hinge", position: relativeJointLocation, orientation: hingeOrientation ) // Create a PhysicsSphericalJoint between the two pins. let revoluteJoint = PhysicsSphericalJoint(pin0: attachmentPin, pin1: ballPin) try revoluteJoint.addToSimulation() } } The following image is a screenshot of the operation when changing to PhysicsSphericalJoint. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

RealityKit generates an excessive amount of logging
During regular use, RealityKit generates an excessive amount of internal logging that is not actionable by third party developers. When developing an iOS RealityKit/ARKit app, this makes the Xcode console challenging to use for regular work. (FB19173812) See screenshots below. Xcode does have an option for filtering out logging from specific SDKs, but enabling this feature to suppress the logging of RealityKit and related SDKs like PHASE is something developers have to do dozens of times each day. After a year of developing a RealityKit app, this process becomes frustrating. If SDKs like Foundation, UIKit, and SwiftUI generated as much logging as RealityKit and related SDKs, Xcode's console would be unusable. Is there any way to disable the logging of RealityKit and PHASE permanently? Thank you for any help you provide.

In 26.2 Xcode attempts to profile and invariably crashes. === Error summary: === 1x DYErrorDomain (512) - guest app crashed (512) 1x com.apple.gputools.MTLReplayer (100) - Abort trap: 6 === First Error === Domain: DYErrorDomain Error code: 512 Description: guest app crashed (512) GTErrorKeyPID: 26913 GTErrorKeyProcessName: GPUToolsReplayService GTErrorKeyCrashDate: 2026-01-09 19:22:52 +0000 === Underlying Error #1 === Domain: com.apple.gputools.MTLReplayer Error code: 100 Description: Abort trap: 6 Call stack: 0 GPUToolsReplay 0x0000000249c25850 MakeNSError + 284 1 GPUToolsReplay 0x0000000249c26428 HandleCrashSignal + 252 2 libsystem_platform.dylib 0x00000001856c7744 _sigtramp + 56 3 libsystem_pthread.dylib 0x00000001856bd888 pthread_kill + 296 4 libsystem_c.dylib 0x00000001855c2850 abort + 124 5 libsystem_c.dylib 0x00000001855c1a84 err + 0 6 IOGPU 0x00000001a9ea60a8 -[IOGPUMetal4CommandQueue _commit:count:commitFeedback:].cold.1 + 0 7 IOGPU 0x00000001a9ea0df8 __77-[IOGPUMetal4CommandQueue commitFillArgs:count:args:argsSize:commitFeedback:]_block_invoke + 0 8 IOGPU 0x00000001a9ea1004 -[IOGPUMetal4CommandQueue _commit:count:commitFeedback:] + 148 9 AGXMetalG14X 0x00000001158a2c98 -[AGXG14XFamilyCommandQueue_mtlnext noMergeCommit:count:options:commitFeedback:error:] + 116 10 AGXMetalG14X 0x0000000115a45c14 +[AGXG14XFamilyRenderContext_mtlnext mergeRenderEncoders:count:options:commitFeedback:queue:error:] + 4740 11 AGXMetalG14X 0x00000001158a2b34 -[AGXG14XFamilyCommandQueue_mtlnext commit:count:options:] + 96 12 GPUToolsReplay 0x0000000249bf0644 GTMTLReplayController_defaultDispatchFunction_noPinning + 2744 13 GPUToolsReplay 0x0000000249befb10 GTMTLReplayController_defaultDispatchFunction + 1368 14 GPUToolsReplay 0x0000000249b7a61c _ZL16DispatchFunctionP21GTMTLReplayControllerPK11GTTraceFuncRb + 476 15 GPUToolsReplay 0x0000000249b8603c ___ZN35GTUSCSamplingStreamingManagerHelper19StreamFrameTimeDataEv_block_invoke + 456 16 Foundation 0x0000000186f6c878 __NSBLOCKOPERATION_IS_CALLING_OUT_TO_A_BLOCK__ + 24 17 Foundation 0x0000000186f6c740 -[NSBlockOperation main] + 96 18 Foundation 0x0000000186f6c6d8 __NSOPERATION_IS_INVOKING_MAIN__ + 16 19 Foundation 0x0000000186f6c308 -[NSOperation start] + 640 20 Foundation 0x0000000186f6c080 __NSOPERATIONQUEUE_IS_STARTING_AN_OPERATION__ + 16 21 Foundation 0x0000000186f6bf70 __NSOQSchedule_f + 164 22 libdispatch.dylib 0x00000001855104d0 _dispatch_block_async_invoke2 + 148 23 libdispatch.dylib 0x000000018551aad4 _dispatch_client_callout + 16 24 libdispatch.dylib 0x00000001855056e4 _dispatch_continuation_pop + 596 25 libdispatch.dylib 0x0000000185504d58 _dispatch_async_redirect_invoke + 580 26 libdispatch.dylib 0x0000000185512fc8 _dispatch_root_queue_drain + 364 27 libdispatch.dylib 0x0000000185513784 _dispatch_worker_thread2 + 180 28 libsystem_pthread.dylib 0x00000001856b9e10 _pthread_wqthread + 232 29 libsystem_pthread.dylib 0x00000001856b8b9c start_wqthread + 8 Replayer breadcrumbs: [ ] GTErrorKeyProcessSignal: SIGABRT === Setup === Capture device: star.localdomain (Mac14,14) - macOS 26.2 (25C56) - 0BA10D1D-D340-5F2E-934B-536675AF9BA1 Metal version: 370.64.2 Supported graphics APIs: Metal device: Apple M2 Ultra Supported GPU families: Apple1 Apple2 Apple3 Apple4 Apple5 Apple6 Apple7 Apple8 Mac1 Mac2 Common1 Common2 Common3 Metal3 Metal4 Replay device: star (Mac14,14) - macOS 26.2 (25C56) - 0BA10D1D-D340-5F2E-934B-536675AF9BA1 Metal version: 370.64.2 Supported graphics APIs: Metal device: Apple M2 Ultra Supported GPU families: Apple1 Apple2 Apple3 Apple4 Apple5 Apple6 Apple7 Apple8 Mac1 Mac2 Common1 Common2 Common3 Metal3 Metal4 Host: Mac14,14 - macOS 26.2 (25C56) Tool: Xcode (17C52) Known SDKs:

Why does CanyonCrosser use both Class and Struct for RealityKit Systems?
In the CanyonCrosser example project, some RealityKit systems are implemented as classes while others are structs. What’s the reason for using different types?

Present GameCentre Overlay Programmatically
As GKGameCenterViewController has been deprecated, it seems that GKAccessPoint is now the correct way to present the GameCentre leaderboard. But the placement options for the GKAccessPoint are very limited and lead to misaligned UI that looks clunky, as the GKAccessPoint does not align with the system navigation toolbar. Am I missing something here or am I just stuck with a lopsided UI now? I much preferred how this previously worked, where I could present the GKGameCenterViewController in a sheet from my own button

Gamekit Achievements Won't Unhide
Added achievements to my approved app. Added them for the next release version, which I am running in simulator. When I look at the Achievements page, I can see that there are 17 Achievements available (correct), but they all show as hidden, despite checking the "No" box in App Store Connect.

Trouble with MDLMesh.newBox()
