NWListener/NWConnection reclaimed by OS when app goes in Suspended State
I was exploring the scenarios where an NWListener or NWConnection can be invalidated or reclaimed by the OS itself. I came across the document TN2277: Networking and Multitasking, which discusses situations where iOS can reclaim the underlying socket descriptor. The document states: while the app is suspended the system may choose to reclaim resources out from underneath a network socket used by the app, thereby closing the network connection represented by that socket. From this, I understand that when the app is in a suspended state, the OS may reclaim the socket descriptor. My questions are: In what scenarios does the OS not reclaim the socket descriptor while the app is suspended, and in which cases does it reclaim it? When reclamation occurs, does the OS reclaim 'a' single NWListener/NWConnection, or does it reclaim 'all' NWListener/NWConnections opened by the application? Thanks.

How can a Network Extension notify or trigger tasks in the main app when it’s backgrounded or killed?
I’m developing a iOS VPN app, and I need to execute a task in the main app even when it’s in the background or killed state. I know the Network Extension continues running during those times. Is there a way for the extension to immediately notify the app or trigger a task on the app side?

Securely transmit UIImage to app running on desktop website
Hello everyone, I'm trying to figure out how to transmit a UIImage (png or tiff) securely to an application running in my desktop browser (Mac or PC). The desktop application and iOS app would potentially be running on the same local network (iOS hotspot or something) or have no internet connection at all. I'm trying to securely send over an image that the running desktop app could ingest. I was thinking something like a local server securely accepting image data from an iPhone. Any suggestions ideas or where to look for more info would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for your help.

Local Network permission appears to be ignored after reboot, even though it was granted
We have a Java application built for macOS. On the first launch, the application prompts the user to allow local network access. We've correctly added the NSLocalNetworkUsageDescription key to the Info.plist, and the provided description appears in the system prompt. After the user grants permission, the application can successfully connect to a local server using its hostname. However, the issue arises after the system is rebooted. When the application is launched again, macOS does not prompt for local network access a second time—which is expected, as the permission was already granted. Despite this, the application is unable to connect to the local server. It appears the previously granted permission is being ignored after a reboot. A temporary workaround is to manually toggle the Local Network permission off and back on via System Settings > Privacy & Security, which restores connectivity—until the next reboot. This behavior is highly disruptive, both for us and for a significant number of our users. We can reproduce this on multiple systems... The issues started from macOS Sequoia 15.0 By opening the application bundle using "Show Package Contents," we can launch the application via "JavaAppLauncher" without any issues. Once started, the application is able to connect to our server over the local network. This seems to bypass the granted permissions? "JavaAppLauncher" is also been used in our Info.plist file Removing the following plist in Recovery Mode seems to resolve the issue rm "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/com.apple.networkextension.plist" Is this safe to do?

NFC Missing required entitlement
Hi, I have created an application for NFC tag scanning and read the tag data. For that, i enabled the capability: NearField Communication Tag reading. Do watchOS apps support IP request communication within a local area network?
As a third-party application on Apple Watch, can it be located in the same LAN httpServer? Questions on Device Pairing with DeviceDiscoveryUI in Wi-Fi Aware
At WWDC 25, Dr. Swetank mentioned, “DeviceDiscoveryUI is for making connections between apps and from an app to another device. It supports pairing with both Apple and third-party devices.” I find the pairing process in DeviceDiscoveryUI via Wi-Fi Aware intriguing. I have two questions: Can we pair devices via Bluetooth first and then establish a Wi-Fi Aware connection? If I use DeviceDiscoveryUI, how should I write an Android program to correspond with it and achieve iPhone-Android pairing? URL filter app with multiple configurations
Hello, We've been working on an app that uses the new NEUrlFilter API and we've got a question. Currently, the system is designed with the assumption that a single app == usecase == single remote database. But what if we would like to give the user the ability to use different blocklists? For example, the user may want to: Block scam domains Block tracking domains Block adult domains Or any composition of these 3 What should we do to give the user this option? It seems that we could differentiate different databases by using different PIR service hostnames, but that would also mean that we'll have to send several requests for the same usecase but with different PIR service hostnames (and they'll all share the same app bundle ID). Will these requests be accepted then? If not, is there an alternative? PS: By sending a request I mean submitting this form

[iPadOS 28] EACCES (Permission Denied) on UDP Broadcast despite Multicast Networking Entitlement
My application (using a nested framework for networking) was working correctly on iPadOS 18, but failed to perform a UDP broadcast operation after upgrading the device to iPadOS 28. The low-level console logs consistently show a "Permission denied" error. Symptoms & Error Message: When attempting to send a UDP broadcast packet using NWConnection (or a similar low-level socket call within the framework), the connection fails immediately with the following error logged in the console: nw_socket_service_writes_block_invoke [C2:1] sendmsg(fd 6, 124 bytes) [13: Permission denied] (Error code 13 corresponds to EACCES). Verification Steps (What I have checked): Multicast Networking Entitlement is Approved and Applied: The necessary entitlement (com.apple.developer.networking.multicast) was granted by Apple. The Provisioning Profile used for signing the Host App Target has been regenerated and explicitly includes "Multicast Networking" capability (see attached screenshot). I confirmed that Entitlements cannot be added directly to the Framework Target, only the Host App Target, which is the expected behavior. Local Network Privacy is Configured: The Host App's Info.plist contains the NSLocalNetworkUsageDescription key with a clear usage string. Crucially, the Local Network Access alert does not reliably appear when the Broadcast function is first called (despite a full reinstall after OS upgrade). Even when Local Network Access is manually enabled in Settings, the Broadcast still fails with EACCES. Code Implementation: The Broadcast is attempted using NWConnection to the host 255.255.255.255 on a specific port. Request: Since all required entitlements and profiles are correct, and the failure is a low-level EACCES on a newly updated OS version, I suspect this may be a regression bug in the iPadOS 28 security sandbox when validating the Multicast Networking Entitlement against a low-level socket call (like sendmsg). Has anyone else encountered this specific Permission denied error on iPadOS 28 with a valid Multicast Entitlement, and is there a known workaround aside from switching to mDNS/Bonjour?

How to delete cookies on IOS18
Hello, I have encountered an issue with an iPhone 15PM with iOS 18.5. The NSHTTPCookieStorage failed to clear cookies, but even after clearing them, I was still able to retrieve them. However, on the same system It is normal on iPhone 14PM. I would like to know the specific reason and whether there are any adaptation related issues. Expected timing/delays when triggering background URLSessionTask
My app attempts to upload events and logging data when the user backgrounds the app (i.e., when applicationDidEnterBackground is triggered) by creating an uploadTask using a URLSession with a URLSessionConfiguration.background. When uploading these events after being backgrounded, we call beginBackgroundTask on UIApplication, which gives us about 25-30 seconds before the expirationHandler gets triggered. I am noticing, however, that the expirationHandler is frequently called and no upload attempts have even started. This might be reasonable if, for example, I had other uploads in progress initiated prior to backgrounding, but this is not the case. Could someone confirm that, when initiating an uploadTask while the app is backgrounded using a backgroundSession, there's really no way to predict when that upload is going to begin? My observation is that about 10-20% of the time it does not begin within 20 seconds of backgrounding, and I have many events coming from clients in the field showing as much.

Feedback NetworkListener: Endpoint, QUIC
Good morning, I have been playing with he new Networking framework released in beta, and i think its amazing how powerful and simple it is. However i have been tackling some issues with it, it seems that the NetworkListener does not allow us to configure a specific endpoint for any of the protocols, UDP, TCP (QUIC, TLS) Is this intended or just not missing features as of the Beta ? I figured out how to use bonjour to get a port (as i am brand new to using Networking on macOS and Swift) I get that the use of this is mainly as a client to connect to servers, but it would make more sense to have a high level abstraction of what already exist, wouldn't it be more intuitive to configure a NetworkEndpoint that contains either a Bonjour Service or an endpoint with configured port that we can then configure on the Listener, instead of doing .service(...) ?

Seeking Recommended Approach for Sharing VPN Profile Private Keys Between Sandboxed macOS App and Packet Tunnel System Extension
Hello Apple Developer Community, We are developing a full-tunnel VPN app for macOS that utilizes a packet tunnel network system extension (via NEPacketTunnelProvider). We're committed to using a system extension for this purpose, as it aligns with our requirements for system-wide tunneling. The app is sandboxed and intended for distribution on the Mac App Store. Here's the workflow: The app (running in user context) downloads a VPN profile from our server. It generates private keys, appends them to the profile, and attempts to save this enhanced profile securely in the keychain. The packet tunnel system extension (running in root context) needs to access this profile, including the private keys, to establish the VPN connection. We've encountered challenges in securely sharing this data across the user-root boundary due to sandbox restrictions and keychain access limitations. Here's what we've tried so far, along with the issues: Writing from the App to the System Keychain: Attempted to store the profile in the system keychain for root access. This fails because the sandboxed app lacks permissions to write to the system keychain. (We're avoiding non-sandboxed approaches for App Store compliance.) Extension Reading Directly from the User Login Keychain: Tried having the extension access the user's login keychain by its path. We manually added the network extension (located in /Library/SystemExtensions//bundle.systemextension) to the keychain item's Access Control List (ACL) via Keychain Access.app for testing. This results in "item not found" errors, likely due to the root context not seamlessly accessing user-keychain items without additional setup. Using Persistent References in NETunnelProviderProtocol: The app stores the profile in the user keychain and saves a persistent reference (as Data) in the NETunnelProviderProtocol's identityReference or similar fields. The extension then attempts to retrieve the item using this reference. We manually added the network extension (located in /Library/SystemExtensions//bundle.systemextension) to the keychain item's Access Control List (ACL) via Keychain Access.app for testing. However, this leads to error -25308 (errSecInteractionNotAllowed) when the extension tries to access it, possibly because of the root-user context mismatch or interaction requirements. Programmatically Adding the Extension to the ACL: Explored using SecAccess and SecACL APIs to add the extension as a trusted application. This requires SecTrustedApplicationCreateFromPath to create a SecTrustedApplicationRef from the extension's path. Issue 1: The sandboxed app can't reliably obtain the installed extension's path (e.g., via scanning /Library/SystemExtensions or systemextensionsctl), as sandbox restrictions block access. Issue 2: SecTrustedApplicationCreateFromPath is deprecated since macOS 10.15, and we're hesitant to rely on it for future compatibility. We've reviewed documentation on keychain sharing, access groups (including com.apple.managed.vpn.shared, but we're not using managed profiles/MDM) as the profiles are download from a server, and alternatives like XPC for on-demand communication, but we're unsure if XPC is suitable for sensitive data like private keys during tunnel creation. And if this is recommended what is going to be the approach here. What is the recommended, modern approach for this scenario? Is there a non-deprecated way to handle ACLs or share persistent references across contexts? Should we pursue a special entitlement for a custom access group, or is there a better pattern using NetworkExtension APIs? Any insights, code snippets, or references to similar implementations would be greatly appreciated. We're targeting macOS 15+. Thanks in advance!

Determine outgoing flow source IPs without allowing data leakage using NEFilterDataProvider
I'm looking for help with a network extension filtering issue. Specifically, we have a subclass of NEFilterDataProvider that is used to filter flows based upon a set of rules, including source IP and destination IP. We've run into an issue where the source IP is frequently 0.0.0.0 (or the IPv6 equivalent) on outgoing flows. This has made it so rules based upon source IP don't work. This is also an issue as we report these connections, but we're lacking critical data. We were able to work around the issue somewhat by keeping a list of flows that we allow that we periodically check to see if the source IP is available, and then report after it becomes available. We also considered doing a "peekBytes" to allow a bit of data to flow and then recheck the flow, but we don't want to allow data leakage on connections that should be blocked because of the source IP. Is there a way to force the operating system or network extension frameworks to determine the source IP for an outbound flow without allowing any bytes to flow to the network? STEPS TO REPRODUCE Create a network filtering extension for filtering flows using NEFilterDataProvider See that when handleNewFlow: is called, the outgoing flow lacks the source IP (is 0.0.0.0) in most cases There is this post that is discussing a similar question, though for a slightly different reason. I imagine the answer to this and the other post will be related, at least as far as NEFilterDataProvider:handleNewFlow not having source IP is considered. Thanks!

NEFilterManager saveToPreferences fails with "permission denied" on TestFlight build
I'm working on enabling a content filter in my iOS app using NEFilterManager and NEFilterProviderConfiguration. Questions on Device Pairing with DeviceDiscoveryUI in Wi-Fi Aware
At WWDC 25, Dr. Swetank mentioned, “DeviceDiscoveryUI is for making connections between apps and from an app to another device. It supports pairing with both Apple and third-party devices.” I find the pairing process in DeviceDiscoveryUI via Wi-Fi Aware intriguing. I have two questions: Can we pair devices via Bluetooth first and then establish a Wi-Fi Aware connection? If I use DeviceDiscoveryUI, how should I write an Android program to correspond with it and achieve iPhone-Android pairing? URL filter app with multiple configurations
Hello, We've been working on an app that uses the new NEUrlFilter API and we've got a question. Currently, the system is designed with the assumption that a single app == usecase == single remote database. But what if we would like to give the user the ability to use different blocklists? For example, the user may want to: Block scam domains Block tracking domains Block adult domains Or any composition of these 3 What should we do to give the user this option? It seems that we could differentiate different databases by using different PIR service hostnames, but that would also mean that we'll have to send several requests for the same usecase but with different PIR service hostnames (and they'll all share the same app bundle ID). Will these requests be accepted then? If not, is there an alternative? PS: By sending a request I mean submitting this form

[iPadOS 28] EACCES (Permission Denied) on UDP Broadcast despite Multicast Networking Entitlement
My application (using a nested framework for networking) was working correctly on iPadOS 18, but failed to perform a UDP broadcast operation after upgrading the device to iPadOS 28. The low-level console logs consistently show a "Permission denied" error. Symptoms & Error Message: When attempting to send a UDP broadcast packet using NWConnection (or a similar low-level socket call within the framework), the connection fails immediately with the following error logged in the console: nw_socket_service_writes_block_invoke [C2:1] sendmsg(fd 6, 124 bytes) [13: Permission denied] (Error code 13 corresponds to EACCES). Verification Steps (What I have checked): Multicast Networking Entitlement is Approved and Applied: The necessary entitlement (com.apple.developer.networking.multicast) was granted by Apple. The Provisioning Profile used for signing the Host App Target has been regenerated and explicitly includes "Multicast Networking" capability (see attached screenshot). I confirmed that Entitlements cannot be added directly to the Framework Target, only the Host App Target, which is the expected behavior. Local Network Privacy is Configured: The Host App's Info.plist contains the NSLocalNetworkUsageDescription key with a clear usage string. Crucially, the Local Network Access alert does not reliably appear when the Broadcast function is first called (despite a full reinstall after OS upgrade). Even when Local Network Access is manually enabled in Settings, the Broadcast still fails with EACCES. Code Implementation: The Broadcast is attempted using NWConnection to the host 255.255.255.255 on a specific port. Request: Since all required entitlements and profiles are correct, and the failure is a low-level EACCES on a newly updated OS version, I suspect this may be a regression bug in the iPadOS 28 security sandbox when validating the Multicast Networking Entitlement against a low-level socket call (like sendmsg). Has anyone else encountered this specific Permission denied error on iPadOS 28 with a valid Multicast Entitlement, and is there a known workaround aside from switching to mDNS/Bonjour?

How to delete cookies on IOS18
Hello, I have encountered an issue with an iPhone 15PM with iOS 18.5. The NSHTTPCookieStorage failed to clear cookies, but even after clearing them, I was still able to retrieve them. However, on the same system It is normal on iPhone 14PM. I would like to know the specific reason and whether there are any adaptation related issues. Expected timing/delays when triggering background URLSessionTask
My app attempts to upload events and logging data when the user backgrounds the app (i.e., when applicationDidEnterBackground is triggered) by creating an uploadTask using a URLSession with a URLSessionConfiguration.background. When uploading these events after being backgrounded, we call beginBackgroundTask on UIApplication, which gives us about 25-30 seconds before the expirationHandler gets triggered. I am noticing, however, that the expirationHandler is frequently called and no upload attempts have even started. This might be reasonable if, for example, I had other uploads in progress initiated prior to backgrounding, but this is not the case. Could someone confirm that, when initiating an uploadTask while the app is backgrounded using a backgroundSession, there's really no way to predict when that upload is going to begin? My observation is that about 10-20% of the time it does not begin within 20 seconds of backgrounding, and I have many events coming from clients in the field showing as much.

Feedback NetworkListener: Endpoint, QUIC
Good morning, I have been playing with he new Networking framework released in beta, and i think its amazing how powerful and simple it is. However i have been tackling some issues with it, it seems that the NetworkListener does not allow us to configure a specific endpoint for any of the protocols, UDP, TCP (QUIC, TLS) Is this intended or just not missing features as of the Beta ? I figured out how to use bonjour to get a port (as i am brand new to using Networking on macOS and Swift) I get that the use of this is mainly as a client to connect to servers, but it would make more sense to have a high level abstraction of what already exist, wouldn't it be more intuitive to configure a NetworkEndpoint that contains either a Bonjour Service or an endpoint with configured port that we can then configure on the Listener, instead of doing .service(...) ?

Seeking Recommended Approach for Sharing VPN Profile Private Keys Between Sandboxed macOS App and Packet Tunnel System Extension
Hello Apple Developer Community, We are developing a full-tunnel VPN app for macOS that utilizes a packet tunnel network system extension (via NEPacketTunnelProvider). We're committed to using a system extension for this purpose, as it aligns with our requirements for system-wide tunneling. The app is sandboxed and intended for distribution on the Mac App Store. Here's the workflow: The app (running in user context) downloads a VPN profile from our server. It generates private keys, appends them to the profile, and attempts to save this enhanced profile securely in the keychain. The packet tunnel system extension (running in root context) needs to access this profile, including the private keys, to establish the VPN connection. We've encountered challenges in securely sharing this data across the user-root boundary due to sandbox restrictions and keychain access limitations. Here's what we've tried so far, along with the issues: Writing from the App to the System Keychain: Attempted to store the profile in the system keychain for root access. This fails because the sandboxed app lacks permissions to write to the system keychain. (We're avoiding non-sandboxed approaches for App Store compliance.) Extension Reading Directly from the User Login Keychain: Tried having the extension access the user's login keychain by its path. We manually added the network extension (located in /Library/SystemExtensions//bundle.systemextension) to the keychain item's Access Control List (ACL) via Keychain Access.app for testing. This results in "item not found" errors, likely due to the root context not seamlessly accessing user-keychain items without additional setup. Using Persistent References in NETunnelProviderProtocol: The app stores the profile in the user keychain and saves a persistent reference (as Data) in the NETunnelProviderProtocol's identityReference or similar fields. The extension then attempts to retrieve the item using this reference. We manually added the network extension (located in /Library/SystemExtensions//bundle.systemextension) to the keychain item's Access Control List (ACL) via Keychain Access.app for testing. However, this leads to error -25308 (errSecInteractionNotAllowed) when the extension tries to access it, possibly because of the root-user context mismatch or interaction requirements. Programmatically Adding the Extension to the ACL: Explored using SecAccess and SecACL APIs to add the extension as a trusted application. This requires SecTrustedApplicationCreateFromPath to create a SecTrustedApplicationRef from the extension's path. Issue 1: The sandboxed app can't reliably obtain the installed extension's path (e.g., via scanning /Library/SystemExtensions or systemextensionsctl), as sandbox restrictions block access. Issue 2: SecTrustedApplicationCreateFromPath is deprecated since macOS 10.15, and we're hesitant to rely on it for future compatibility. We've reviewed documentation on keychain sharing, access groups (including com.apple.managed.vpn.shared, but we're not using managed profiles/MDM) as the profiles are download from a server, and alternatives like XPC for on-demand communication, but we're unsure if XPC is suitable for sensitive data like private keys during tunnel creation. And if this is recommended what is going to be the approach here. What is the recommended, modern approach for this scenario? Is there a non-deprecated way to handle ACLs or share persistent references across contexts? Should we pursue a special entitlement for a custom access group, or is there a better pattern using NetworkExtension APIs? Any insights, code snippets, or references to similar implementations would be greatly appreciated. We're targeting macOS 15+. Thanks in advance!

https address of a certain page within my app
I need to know the https address of a certain page within my app. This is going to be used as a redirect URL. I don't think it is a good idea to use deep links because it has to be an https address. I don't think Universal Links will work because it is not my website that I will be communicating with.

Determine outgoing flow source IPs without allowing data leakage using NEFilterDataProvider
I'm looking for help with a network extension filtering issue. Specifically, we have a subclass of NEFilterDataProvider that is used to filter flows based upon a set of rules, including source IP and destination IP. We've run into an issue where the source IP is frequently 0.0.0.0 (or the IPv6 equivalent) on outgoing flows. This has made it so rules based upon source IP don't work. This is also an issue as we report these connections, but we're lacking critical data. We were able to work around the issue somewhat by keeping a list of flows that we allow that we periodically check to see if the source IP is available, and then report after it becomes available. We also considered doing a "peekBytes" to allow a bit of data to flow and then recheck the flow, but we don't want to allow data leakage on connections that should be blocked because of the source IP. Is there a way to force the operating system or network extension frameworks to determine the source IP for an outbound flow without allowing any bytes to flow to the network? STEPS TO REPRODUCE Create a network filtering extension for filtering flows using NEFilterDataProvider See that when handleNewFlow: is called, the outgoing flow lacks the source IP (is 0.0.0.0) in most cases There is this post that is discussing a similar question, though for a slightly different reason. I imagine the answer to this and the other post will be related, at least as far as NEFilterDataProvider:handleNewFlow not having source IP is considered. Thanks!

NEFilterManager saveToPreferences fails with "permission denied" on TestFlight build
