SwiftData Class Inheritance
Hi, I'm considering using the new SwiftData class inheritance for a new app I'm building. I have a few questions: Is it working well enough for production? I have a number of different object types in my app. Some of them are very similar, and there's always a balance to be struck when it comes to splitting them into different types using class inheritance. Are there some good advice on when to use multiple classes instead of squeezing my object types into a single class? Is there advice against using class inheritance in multiple levels (3-4)? Claes

SwiftData Background Fetching?
Hi, I am experiencing main thread freezes from fetching on Main Actor. Attempting to move the function to a background thread, but whenever I reference the TestModel in a nonisolated context or in another model actor, I get this warning: Main actor-isolated conformance of 'TestModel' to 'PersistentModel' cannot be used in actor-isolated context; this is an error in the Swift 6 language mode Is there a way to do this correctly? CloudKit CKRecordZone Deletion Issue
CloudKit CKRecordZone Deletion Issue Problem: CloudKit record zones deleted via CKDatabase.modifyRecordZones(deleting:) or CKModifyRecordZonesOperation are successfully removed but then reappear. I suspect they are automatically reinstated by CloudKit sync, despite successful deletion confirmation. Environment: SwiftData with CloudKit integration Custom CloudKit zones created for legacy zone-based sharing Observed Behavior: Create custom zone (e.g., "TestZone1") via CKDatabase.modifyRecordZones(saving:) Copy records to zone for sharing purposes Delete zone using any CloudKit deletion API - returns success, no errors Immediate verification: Zone is gone from database.allRecordZones() After SwiftData/CloudKit sync or app restart: Zone reappears Reproduction: Tested with three different deletion methods - all exhibit same behaviour: modifyRecordZones(deleting:) async API CKModifyRecordZonesOperation (fire-and-forget) CKModifyRecordZonesOperation with result callbacks Zone deletion succeeds, change tokens (used to track updates to shared records) cleaned up But zones are restored presumably by CloudKit background sync Expected: Deleted zones should remain deleted Actual: Zones are reinstated, creating orphaned zones

SwiftData updates in the background are not merged in the main UI context
Hello, SwiftData is not working correctly with Swift Concurrency. And it’s sad after all this time. I personally found a regression. The attached code works perfectly fine on iOS 17.5 but doesn’t work correctly on iOS 18 or iOS 18.1. A model can be updated from the background (Task, Task.detached or ModelActor) and refreshes the UI, but as soon as the same item is updated from the View (fetched via a Query), the next background updates are not reflected anymore in the UI, the UI is not refreshed, the updates are not merged into the main. How to reproduce: Launch the app Tap the plus button in the navigation bar to create a new item Tap on the “Update from Task”, “Update from Detached Task”, “Update from ModelActor” many times Notice the time is updated Tap on the “Update from View” (once or many times) Notice the time is updated Tap again on “Update from Task”, “Update from Detached Task”, “Update from ModelActor” many times Notice that the time is not update anymore Am I doing something wrong? Or is this a bug in iOS 18/18.1? Many other posts talk about issues where updates from background thread are not merged into the main thread. I don’t know if they all are related but it would be nice to have 1/ bug fixed, meaning that if I update an item from a background, it’s reflected in the UI, and 2/ proper documentation on how to use SwiftData with Swift Concurrency (ModelActor). I don’t know if what I’m doing in my buttons is correct or not. CloudKit: shared records creatorUserRecordID and lastModifiedUserRecordID
Hi, I am testing a situation with shared CKRecords where the data in the CKRecord syncs fine, but the creatorUserRecordID.recordName and lastModifiedUserRecordID.recordName shows "defaultOwner" (which maps to the CKCurrentUserDefaultName constant) even though I made sure I edit the CKRecord value from a different iCloud account. In fact, on the CloudKit dashboard, it shows the correct user recordIDs in the metadata for the 'Created' and 'Modified' fields, but not in the CKRecord. I am mostly testing this on the iPhone simulator with the debugger attached. Is that a possible reason for this, or is there some other reason the lastModifiedUserRecordID is showing the value for 'CKCurrentUserDefaultName'? It would be pretty difficult to build in functionality to look up changes by a different userID if this is the case.

iOS 26.1 and SwiftData: Can't reuse store?
I have one target building and filling the SwiftData store and then copying the same store file to another target of the app to use the contents. That worked fine from iOS 17 to iOS 26.0.1 Under iOS 26.1 I am getting following error: CoreData: error: This store file was previously used on a build with Persistence-1522 but is now running on a build with Persistence-1518. file:///Users/xxx/Library/Developer/CoreSimulator/Devices/0FE92EA2-57FA-4A5E-ABD0-DAB4DABC3E02/data/Containers/Data/Application/B44D3256-9B09-4A60-94E2-C5F11A6519E7/Documents/default.store What does it mean and how to get back to working app under iOS 26.1?

Persistent CloudKit Server-to-Server INTERNAL_ERROR (500) Despite Correct Key Parsing & Request Formatting for /users/current
Hello Devs, I'm encountering a persistent INTERNAL_ERROR (HTTP 500) when making Server-to-Server API calls to CloudKit, specifically when trying to hit the /users/current endpoint, even after meticulously verifying all client-side components. I'm hoping someone might have insight into what could cause this. Context: Goal: Authenticate to CloudKit from a Vercel Serverless Function (Node.js) to perform operations like record queries. SwiftData crash when enabling CloudKit for existing users (Free to Pro upgrade)
Hi, I am implementing a premium feature in my app where CloudKit syncing is available only for "Pro" users. The Workflow: Free Users: I initialize the ModelContainer with cloudKitDatabase: .none so their data stays local. Pro Upgrade: When a user purchases a subscription, I restart the container with cloudKitDatabase: .automatic to enable syncing. The Problem: If a user starts as "Free" (creates local data) and later upgrades to "Pro", the app crashes immediately upon launch with the following error: Fatal error: Failed to create ModelContainer: SwiftDataError(_error: SwiftData.SwiftDataError._Error.loadIssueModelContainer, _explanation: nil) It seems that SwiftData fails to load the existing data once the configuration changes to expect a CloudKit-backed store. My Question: Is there a supported way to "toggle" CloudKit on for an existing local dataset without causing this crash? I want the user's existing local data to start syncing once they pay, but currently, it just crashes. Extending @Model with custom macros
I am trying to extend my PersistedModels like so: @Versioned(3) @Model class MyType { var name: String init() { name = "hello" } } but it seems that SwiftData's@Model macro is unable to read the properties added by my @Versioned macro. I have tried changing the order and it ignores them regardless. version is not added to schemaMetadata and version needs to be persisted. I was planning on using this approach to add multiple capabilities to my model types. Is this possible to do with macros? SwiftData error: Attempting to retrieve an NSManagedObjectModel version checksum while the model is still editable
Hi, I'm getting a very odd error log in my SwiftData setup for an iOS app. It is implemented to support schema migration. When starting the app, it simply prints the following log twice (seems to be dependent on how many migration steps, I have two steps in my sample code): CoreData: error: Attempting to retrieve an NSManagedObjectModel version checksum while the model is still editable. This may result in an unstable verison checksum. Add model to NSPersistentStoreCoordinator and try again. (Yes there is a mistyped word "verison", this is exactly the log) The code actually fully works. But I have neither CloudKit configured, nor is this app in Production yet. I'm still just developing. CKSyncEngine save existing CKRecord
I have transitioned to CKSyncEngine for syncing data to iCloud, and it is working quite well. I have a question regarding best practices for modifying and saving a CKRecord which already exists in the private or shared database. In my current app, most CKRecords will never be modified after saving to the database, so I do not persist a received record locally after updating my local data model. In the rare event that the local data for that record is modified, I manually fetch the associated server record from the database, modify it, and then use CKSyncEngine to save the modified record. As an alternative method, I can create a new CKRecord locally with the corresponding recordID and the modified data, and then use CKSyncEngine to attempt to save that record to the database. Doing so generates an error in the delegate method handleSentRecordZoneChanges, where I receive the local record I tried to save back inevent.failedRecordSaves with a .serverRecordChanged error, along with the corresponding server CKRecord. I can then update that server record with the local data and re-save using CKSyncEngine. I have not yet seen any issues when doing it this way. The advantage of the latter method is that CKSyncEngine handles the entire database operation, eliminating the manual fetch step. My question is: is this an acceptable practice, or could this result in other unforeseen issues?

Swift Data Predicate Evaluation Crashes in Release Build When Generics Used
I'm using Swift Data for an app that requires iOS 18. All of my models conform to a protocol that guarantees they have a 'serverID' String variable. I wrote a function that would allow me to pass in a serverID String and have it fetch the model object that matched. Because I am lazy and don't like writing the same functions over and over, I used a Self reference so that all of my conforming models get this static function. Imagine my model is called "WhatsNew". Tested on iOS 18.0 and 18.1 beta. How can I resolve this? I have two dozen types that conform to this protocol. I could manually specialize this function for every type myself but... ugh.

Here’s the situation: • You’re downloading a huge list of data from iCloud. • You’re saving it one by one (sequentially) into SwiftData. • You don’t want the SwiftUI view to refresh until all the data is imported. • After all the import is finished, SwiftUI should show the new data. The Problem If you insert into the same ModelContext that SwiftUI’s @Environment(.modelContext) is watching, each insert may cause SwiftUI to start reloading immediately. That will make the UI feel slow, and glitchy, because SwiftUI will keep trying to re-render while you’re still importing. How to achieve this in Swift Data ?

Swiftdata cloudkit synchronization issues
Hi, I did cloudkit synchronization using swiftdata. However, synchronization does not occur automatically, and synchronization occurs intermittently only when the device is closed and opened. For confirmation, after changing the data in Device 1 (saving), when the data is fetched from Device 2, there is no change. I've heard that there's still an issue with swiftdata sync and Apple is currently troubleshooting it, is the phenomenon I'm experiencing in the current version normal?

SwiftData JSONDataStore with relationships
I am trying to add a custom JSON DataStore and DataStoreConfiguration for SwiftData. Apple kindly provided some sample code in the WWDC24 session, "Create a custom data store with SwiftData", and (once updated for API changes since WWDC) that works fine. However, when I try to add a relationship between two classes, it fails. Has anyone successfully made a JSONDataStore with a relationship? When I run the app again to load the data, I get an error (that there wasn't room to include in this post). Even if I change Apple's code to not assign a new identifier, so the relationship property and its pointee have the same identifier, it still doesn't load. Am I doing something obviously wrong, or are relationships not supported in custom data stores?

Safari App Extension fails to connect to CloudKit daemon (cloudd) with XPC communication errors -- CKErrorDomain Code=6 / NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=4099 – Unable to connect to CloudKit daemon
I'm working on a macOS app with a Safari web extension. I'm trying to share a SwiftData model between devices using CloudKit synchronization. I am able to get synchronization in the main app on the same device, CloudKit sync works correctly — changes appear in the CloudKit Dashboard under com.apple.coredata.cloudkit.zone. However, in the Safari App Extension, data is saved locally and persists across launches, but never syncs to CloudKit. I have followed the recommended practices for configuring the App Group and entitlements, but the issue persists. Questions: Is there an official limitation preventing Safari App Extensions from connecting to the CloudKit daemon (cloudd)? If not, what entitlements or configuration changes are required for a Safari App Extension to successfully sync with CloudKit? Is the xpc_error=159 from bootstrap_look_up() a known sandbox restriction for this extension type? Any guidance from Apple engineers or others who have successfully used CloudKit from a Safari App Extension would be appreciated. Hello 👋, I encounter the "This model instance was invalidated because its backing data could no longer be found the store" crash with SwiftData. Which from what I understood means I try to access a model after it has been removed from the store (makes sense). I made a quick sample to reproduce/better understand because there some case(s) I can't figure it out. In those case an unsaved model is served by the model(for:) API and accessing properties later on will resolve correctly. The doc says: "The identified persistent model, if known to the context; otherwise, an unsaved model with its persistentModelID property set to persistentModelID." But I'm not sure about deleteV3. It seems the ModelContext is kind of "aware" there is still cyclic reference between my models that are retained in my code so it will serve these instances instead when calling model(for:) API ? I see my home still have 4 rooms (instead of 2). So I then try to access rooms that are deleted and it crash. Why of that ? I mean why not returning home with two room like in deleteV1 ? Because SwiftData heavily rely on CoreData may be I miss a very simple thing here. If someone read this and have a clue for me I would be extremely graceful. How to get PersistentIdentifier from a model created in a transaction?
I have a ModelActor that creates a hierarchy of models and returns a PersistentIdentifier for the root. I'd like to do that in a transaction, but I don't know of a good method of getting that identifier if the models are created in a transaction. For instance, an overly simple example: func createItem(timestamp: Date) throws -> PersistentIdentifier { try modelContext.transaction { let item = Item(timestamp: timestamp) modelContext.insert(item) } // how to return item.persistentModelID? } I can't return the item.persistentModelID from the transaction closure and even if I could, it will be a temporary ID until after the transaction is executed. I can't create the Item outside the transaction and just have the transaction do an insert because swift will raise a data race error if you then try to return item.persistentModelID. Is there any way to do this besides a modelContext.fetch* with separate unique identifiers?

Hi, I'm considering using the new SwiftData class inheritance for a new app I'm building. I have a few questions: Is it working well enough for production? I have a number of different object types in my app. Some of them are very similar, and there's always a balance to be struck when it comes to splitting them into different types using class inheritance. Are there some good advice on when to use multiple classes instead of squeezing my object types into a single class? Is there advice against using class inheritance in multiple levels (3-4)? Claes

Hi, I am experiencing main thread freezes from fetching on Main Actor. CloudKit CKRecordZone Deletion Issue Problem: CloudKit record zones deleted via CKDatabase.modifyRecordZones(deleting:) or CKModifyRecordZonesOperation are successfully removed but then reappear. I suspect they are automatically reinstated by CloudKit sync, despite successful deletion confirmation. Environment: SwiftData with CloudKit integration Custom CloudKit zones created for legacy zone-based sharing Observed Behavior: Create custom zone (e.g., "TestZone1") via CKDatabase.modifyRecordZones(saving:) Copy records to zone for sharing purposes Delete zone using any CloudKit deletion API - returns success, no errors Immediate verification: Zone is gone from database.allRecordZones() After SwiftData/CloudKit sync or app restart: Zone reappears Reproduction: Tested with three different deletion methods - all exhibit same behaviour: modifyRecordZones(deleting:) async API CKModifyRecordZonesOperation (fire-and-forget) CKModifyRecordZonesOperation with result callbacks Zone deletion succeeds, change tokens (used to track updates to shared records) cleaned up But zones are restored presumably by CloudKit background sync Expected: Deleted zones should remain deleted Actual: Zones are reinstated, creating orphaned zones

SwiftData updates in the background are not merged in the main UI context
Hello, SwiftData is not working correctly with Swift Concurrency. And it’s sad after all this time. I personally found a regression. The attached code works perfectly fine on iOS 17.5 but doesn’t work correctly on iOS 18 or iOS 18.1. A model can be updated from the background (Task, Task.detached or ModelActor) and refreshes the UI, but as soon as the same item is updated from the View (fetched via a Query), the next background updates are not reflected anymore in the UI, the UI is not refreshed, the updates are not merged into the main. How to reproduce: Launch the app Tap the plus button in the navigation bar to create a new item Tap on the “Update from Task”, “Update from Detached Task”, “Update from ModelActor” many times Notice the time is updated Tap on the “Update from View” (once or many times) Notice the time is updated Tap again on “Update from Task”, “Update from Detached Task”, “Update from ModelActor” many times Notice that the time is not update anymore Am I doing something wrong? Or is this a bug in iOS 18/18.1? Many other posts talk about issues where updates from background thread are not merged into the main thread. I don’t know if they all are related but it would be nice to have 1/ bug fixed, meaning that if I update an item from a background, it’s reflected in the UI, and 2/ proper documentation on how to use SwiftData with Swift Concurrency (ModelActor). CloudKit: shared records creatorUserRecordID and lastModifiedUserRecordID
Hi, I am testing a situation with shared CKRecords where the data in the CKRecord syncs fine, but the creatorUserRecordID.recordName and lastModifiedUserRecordID.recordName shows "defaultOwner" (which maps to the CKCurrentUserDefaultName constant) even though I made sure I edit the CKRecord value from a different iCloud account. In fact, on the CloudKit dashboard, it shows the correct user recordIDs in the metadata for the 'Created' and 'Modified' fields, but not in the CKRecord. I am mostly testing this on the iPhone simulator with the debugger attached. Is that a possible reason for this, or is there some other reason the lastModifiedUserRecordID is showing the value for 'CKCurrentUserDefaultName'? It would be pretty difficult to build in functionality to look up changes by a different userID if this is the case.

iOS 26.1 and SwiftData: Can't reuse store?
I have one target building and filling the SwiftData store and then copying the same store file to another target of the app to use the contents. That worked fine from iOS 17 to iOS 26.0.1 Under iOS 26.1 I am getting following error: CoreData: error: This store file was previously used on a build with Persistence-1522 but is now running on a build with Persistence-1518. file:///Users/xxx/Library/Developer/CoreSimulator/Devices/0FE92EA2-57FA-4A5E-ABD0-DAB4DABC3E02/data/Containers/Data/Application/B44D3256-9B09-4A60-94E2-C5F11A6519E7/Documents/default.store What does it mean and how to get back to working app under iOS 26.1?

Persistent CloudKit Server-to-Server INTERNAL_ERROR (500) Despite Correct Key Parsing & Request Formatting for /users/current
Hello Devs, I'm encountering a persistent INTERNAL_ERROR (HTTP 500) when making Server-to-Server API calls to CloudKit, specifically when trying to hit the /users/current endpoint, even after meticulously verifying all client-side components. I'm hoping someone might have insight into what could cause this. Context: Goal: Authenticate to CloudKit from a Vercel Serverless Function (Node.js) to perform operations like record queries. Problem Endpoint: POST https://api.apple-cloudkit.com/database/1/iCloud.com.dannybaseball.Danny-Baseball/production/public/users/current Key Generation Method: Using the CloudKit Dashboard's "Tokens &amp; Keys" -&gt; "New Server-to-Server Key" flow, where I generate the private key using openssl ecparam -name prime256v1 -genkey -noout -out mykey.pem, then extract the public key using openssl ec -in mykey.pem -pubout, and paste the public key material (between BEGIN/END markers) into the dashboard. SwiftData crash when enabling CloudKit for existing users (Free to Pro upgrade)
Hi, I am implementing a premium feature in my app where CloudKit syncing is available only for "Pro" users. The Workflow: Free Users: I initialize the ModelContainer with cloudKitDatabase: .none so their data stays local. Pro Upgrade: When a user purchases a subscription, I restart the container with cloudKitDatabase: .automatic to enable syncing. The Problem: If a user starts as "Free" (creates local data) and later upgrades to "Pro", the app crashes immediately upon launch with the following error: Fatal error: Failed to create ModelContainer: SwiftDataError(_error: SwiftData.SwiftDataError._Error.loadIssueModelContainer, _explanation: nil) It seems that SwiftData fails to load the existing data once the configuration changes to expect a CloudKit-backed store. Extending @Model with custom macros

I have tried changing the order and it ignores them regardless. version is not added to schemaMetadata and version needs to be persisted. SwiftData error: Attempting to retrieve an NSManagedObjectModel version checksum while the model is still editable
Hi, I'm getting a very odd error log in my SwiftData setup for an iOS app. It is implemented to support schema migration. When starting the app, it simply prints the following log twice (seems to be dependent on how many migration steps, I have two steps in my sample code): CoreData: error: Attempting to retrieve an NSManagedObjectModel version checksum while the model is still editable. This may result in an unstable verison checksum. Add model to NSPersistentStoreCoordinator and try again. (Yes there is a mistyped word "verison", this is exactly the log) The code actually fully works. But I have neither CloudKit configured, nor is this app in Production yet. I'm still just developing. CKSyncEngine save existing CKRecord
I have transitioned to CKSyncEngine for syncing data to iCloud, and it is working quite well. I have a question regarding best practices for modifying and saving a CKRecord which already exists in the private or shared database. In my current app, most CKRecords will never be modified after saving to the database, so I do not persist a received record locally after updating my local data model. In the rare event that the local data for that record is modified, I manually fetch the associated server record from the database, modify it, and then use CKSyncEngine to save the modified record. As an alternative method, I can create a new CKRecord locally with the corresponding recordID and the modified data, and then use CKSyncEngine to attempt to save that record to the database. Doing so generates an error in the delegate method handleSentRecordZoneChanges, where I receive the local record I tried to save back inevent.failedRecordSaves with a .serverRecordChanged error, along with the corresponding server CKRecord. I can then update that server record with the local data and re-save using CKSyncEngine. I have not yet seen any issues when doing it this way. The advantage of the latter method is that CKSyncEngine handles the entire database operation, eliminating the manual fetch step. My question is: is this an acceptable practice, or could this result in other unforeseen issues?

Swift Data Predicate Evaluation Crashes in Release Build When Generics Used
I'm using Swift Data for an app that requires iOS 18. All of my models conform to a protocol that guarantees they have a 'serverID' String variable. I wrote a function that would allow me to pass in a serverID String and have it fetch the model object that matched. Because I am lazy and don't like writing the same functions over and over, I used a Self reference so that all of my conforming models get this static function. Imagine my model is called "WhatsNew". How to import large data from Server and save it to Swift Data
Here’s the situation: • You’re downloading a huge list of data from iCloud. • You’re saving it one by one (sequentially) into SwiftData. • You don’t want the SwiftUI view to refresh until all the data is imported. • After all the import is finished, SwiftUI should show the new data. The Problem If you insert into the same ModelContext that SwiftUI’s @Environment(.modelContext) is watching, each insert may cause SwiftUI to start reloading immediately. That will make the UI feel slow, and glitchy, because SwiftUI will keep trying to re-render while you’re still importing. How to achieve this in Swift Data ?

Swiftdata cloudkit synchronization issues
Hi, I did cloudkit synchronization using swiftdata. However, synchronization does not occur automatically, and synchronization occurs intermittently only when the device is closed and opened. For confirmation, after changing the data in Device 1 (saving), when the data is fetched from Device 2, there is no change. I've heard that there's still an issue with swiftdata sync and Apple is currently troubleshooting it, is the phenomenon I'm experiencing in the current version normal?

I am trying to add a custom JSON DataStore and DataStoreConfiguration for SwiftData. Apple kindly provided some sample code in the WWDC24 session, "Create a custom data store with SwiftData", and (once updated for API changes since WWDC) that works fine. However, when I try to add a relationship between two classes, it fails. Has anyone successfully made a JSONDataStore with a relationship? Safari App Extension fails to connect to CloudKit daemon (cloudd) with XPC communication errors -- CKErrorDomain Code=6 / NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=4099 – Unable to connect to CloudKit daemon
I'm working on a macOS app with a Safari web extension. I'm trying to share a SwiftData model between devices using CloudKit synchronization. I am able to get synchronization in the main app on the same device, CloudKit sync works correctly — changes appear in the CloudKit Dashboard under com.apple.coredata.cloudkit.zone. However, in the Safari App Extension, data is saved locally and persists across launches, but never syncs to CloudKit. I have followed the recommended practices for configuring the App Group and entitlements, but the issue persists. Questions: Is there an official limitation preventing Safari App Extensions from connecting to the CloudKit daemon (cloudd)? If not, what entitlements or configuration changes are required for a Safari App Extension to successfully sync with CloudKit? Is the xpc_error=159 from bootstrap_look_up() a known sandbox restriction for this extension type? Any guidance from Apple engineers or others who have successfully used CloudKit from a Safari App Extension would be appreciated. [] await database.delete() } } Calling deleteV() then fetch() will result in a crash or not depending on the scenario. I guess I understand deleteV1, deleteV2. In those case an unsaved model is served by the model(for:) API and accessing properties later on will resolve correctly. The doc says: "The identified persistent model, if known to the context; otherwise, an unsaved model with its persistentModelID property set to persistentModelID." But I'm not sure about deleteV3. It seems the ModelContext is kind of "aware" there is still cyclic reference between my models that are retained in my code so it will serve these instances instead when calling model(for:) API ? I see my home still have 4 rooms (instead of 2). So I then try to access rooms that are deleted and it crash. Why of that ? I mean why not returning home with two room like in deleteV1 ? Because SwiftData heavily rely on CoreData may be I miss a very simple thing here. If someone read this and have a clue for me I would be extremely graceful. icloud imap lsub not following rfc 3501
LSUB always returns all the subscribed folders. For example lsub "" "test/*" returns a list of all the folders and not just subscribed folders that are subfolders of test. How to get PersistentIdentifier from a model created in a transaction?
I have a ModelActor that creates a hierarchy of models and returns a PersistentIdentifier for the root. I'd like to do that in a transaction, but I don't know of a good method of getting that identifier if the models are created in a transaction. For instance, an overly simple example: func createItem(timestamp: Date) throws -> PersistentIdentifier { try modelContext.transaction { let item = Item(timestamp: timestamp) modelContext.insert(item) } // how to return item.persistentModelID? } I can't return the item.persistentModelID from the transaction closure and even if I could, it will be a temporary ID until after the transaction is executed. I can't create the Item outside the transaction and just have the transaction do an insert because swift will raise a data race error if you then try to return item.persistentModelID. Is there any way to do this besides a modelContext.fetch* with separate unique identifiers?
