CATiledLayer flashes and re-draws entirely when re-drawing a single tile
I have filed a bug report for this (FB17734946), but I'm posting it here verbatim in case others have the same issue and in hopes of getting attention from an Apple engineer sooner. When calling setNeedsDisplayInRect on a CATiledLayer - or a UIView whose backing layer is CATiledLayer - one would expect to re-draw only a region identified by the rect passed to the method. This is even written in the documentation for the class: "Regions of the layer may be invalidated using the setNeedsDisplayInRect: method however the update will be asynchronous. While the next display update will most likely not contain the updated content, a future update will." However, upon calling this method, CATiledLayer redraws whole contents instead of just the tile at the specified rect, and it flashes when doing so. It behaves exactly the same as if one had called setNeedsDisplay without passing any rect; all contents are cleared and re-drawn again. I'm 100% sure I've passed in the correct rect of the exact tile that I need to redraw. I have even tried passing much smaller rects, but still the same. (And yes, the rect I've passed accounts for the current level of detail.) I have found this GitHub repo https://github.com/frankus/NetPhotoScroller, which based on discussion from here https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/catiledlayer-blanks-out-tiles-when-redrawing.1333948/ aims at solving these issues by using two private methods on CATiledLayer class: (void)setNeedsDisplayInRect:(CGRect)r levelOfDetail:(int)level; (BOOL)canDrawRect:(CGRect)rect levelOfDetail:(int)level; I have explored the repo in detail, however I wasn't able to test exactly this code from the GitHub repo. I have tried using those two private methods myself (through an Objective-C class that defines the methods in the header file and then a swift class which inherits it), but I couldn't solve the issue; the flashing and the full re-draw is still there. After doing a lot of research, the conclusion seems to be that one cannot use CATiledLayer with contents that are downloaded remotely, on demand, as tiles are being requested. I have, however, found one interesting thing which seems to work so far: before calling setNeedsDisplayInRect (or just setNeedsDisplay, as they behave the same for CATiledLayer in my testing), cache the current layer's contents, and after calling setNeedsDisplay (or setNeedsDisplayInRect), restore the contents back to the layer. This prevents flashing and preserves any tiles that were drawn at the time of the re-draw. let c = tiledLayer.contents tiledLayer.setNeedsDisplay(tileRect) tiledLayer.contents = c However! Docs clearly state the warning: Do not attempt to directly modify the contents property of a CATiledLayer object. Doing so disables the ability of a tiled layer to asynchronously provide tiled content, effectively turning the layer into a regular CALayer object. I believe this message implies modifying the contents property with some raw content, like image data, and that it may be safe to re-apply the existing contents (which are in my testing of type CAImageProvider) -- but I can't rely on an implementation detail in my production app. I have tested this and confirmed that the bug appears on: iPhone 14 Pro, iOS 18.5 iPhone 13 Pro, iOS 17.5.1 iPhone 5s, iOS 15.8.3 iPad Pro 1st gen, iPadOS 18.4.1 a couple simulator versions I can also confirm that the fix (to re-apply contents property) is also working properly on all these versions. Is this expected behavior, that tiled layer redraws itself entirely instead of redrawing specific tiles? Is it safe to modify contents of a CATiledLayer by re-applying the existing contents? If not, is there an alternative to avoid flashing?

How do I size a UITextView with scroll disabled?
tl;dr: UITextView does not auto layout when isScrollEnabled = false I have a screen with multiple UITextViews on it, contained within a ScrollView. For each textview, I calculate the height needed to display the entire content in SwiftUI and set it using the .frame(width:height:) modifier. The UITextView will respect the size passed in and layout within the container, but since UITextView is embedded within a UIScrollView, when a user attempts to scroll on the page, often they will scroll within a UITextView block rather than the page. They currently need to scroll along the margins outside of the textview to get the proper behavior. Since I am already calculating the height to display the text, I don't want the UITextView to scroll. However, when I set isScrollEnabled = false, the text view displays in a single long line that gets truncated. I have tried Setting various frame/size attributes but that seems to have zero affect on the layout. Embedding the textView within a UIView, and then sizing the container, but then the textView does not display at all. Setting a fixed size textContainer in the layoutManager but did not work. There's a lot of code so I can't copy/paste it all, but generally, it looks like struct SwiftUITextEditor: View { @State var text: AttributedString = "" var body: some View { ZStack { MyTextViewRepresentable(text: $text) } .dynamicallySized(from: $text) } } struct MyTextViewRepresentable: UIViewRepresentable { @Binding var text: AttributedString let textView = UITextView(usingTextLayoutManager: true) func makeUIView(context: Context) -> UITextView { textView.attributedText = text textView.isScrollEnabled = false } ... }

tvOS Remote Control Entitlements
I've been looking for a solution to configure the Apple TV remote(s) from the 5th generation and upwards. Some of the basic functionalities are disabling buttons on the physical remote control while maintaining proper functionality on remote controller apps on iOS devices. There seems to be a lack of relevant entitlements in that category, and without it I can't seem to figure out a way to make it work. Any ideas on the matter? Maybe a workaround that allows to configure the Apple TV to work with other remotes? Thank you in advance to anyone that put in thought to my query.

How to create a QuickTime recording like panel?
QuickTime recording palette behaves in a way which I want to replicate in my desktop app - specifically the behaviour when switching spaces, it appears on top. Currently, my app appears on all spaces, and even over fullscreen applications BUT it already exists when I switch to the space, this feels disjointed. I can't find a solution to this behaviour. Here's the Window Collection Behaviours I've tried (on an NSPanel): FullScreenAuxiliary - appears over fullscreen apps. CanJoinAllSpaces - appears on all spaces. These two options make the dock show up on all spaces in the same position, but on each space they already exists. I've tried this behaviour too: MoveToActiveSpace - which as per docs would move the window into active space only when its reopened, mine stays open all the time. I can't find any more information on how QuickTime achieves this.

Crash when minimizing on external display and unplugging it (iOS App on Mac)
Our iOS app, when running as an iOS App on Mac, crashes consistently under the following scenario: 1. Launch the app on an external display. 2. Minimize the app window. 3. Disconnect the external display. The app crashes every time under these conditions. The crash log shows the following call stack: *** Assertion failure in -[UINSWorkspace _maximumContentSizeForWindowOnScreen:], UINSWorkspace.m:401 -[UINSWorkspace _maximumContentSizeForWindowOnScreen:]: screen parameter should not be nil ( 0 CoreFoundation 0x000000018e841df0 __exceptionPreprocess + 176 1 libobjc.A.dylib 0x000000018e306b60 objc_exception_throw + 88 2 Foundation 0x000000018fb6aa78 -[NSCalendarDate initWithCoder:] + 0 3 UIKitMacHelper 0x00000001a9a59110 -[UINSWorkspace _maximumContentSizeForWindowOnScreen:] + 184 4 UIKitMacHelper 0x00000001a9a3e748 -[UINSSceneViewController _usableScreenSizeWithSceneSize:shouldOverride:] + 412 5 UIKitMacHelper 0x00000001a9a3d55c -[UINSSceneViewController _effectiveScaleFactorForLayoutWithOverride:] + 88 6 UIKitMacHelper 0x00000001a9a3f3a8 -[UINSSceneViewController _updateZoomFactors] + 28 7 UIKitMacHelper 0x00000001a9a3f248 -[UINSSceneViewController _updateZoomFactorsAndDoLayout] + 24 8 UIKitMacHelper 0x00000001a9a3df80 -[UINSSceneViewController _doUpdates:] + 104 9 UIKitMacHelper 0x00000001a99ad460 -[UINSSceneViewController observeValueForKeyPath:ofObject:change:context:] + 176 10 Foundation 0x000000018facb0d8 -[NSKeyValueObservance observeValueForKeyPath:ofObject:change:context:] + 388 11 Foundation 0x000000018facb0d8 -[NSKeyValueObservance observeValueForKeyPath:ofObject:change:context:] + 388 12 Foundation 0x000000018fa8f7b4 NSKeyValueNotifyObserver + 252 13 Foundation 0x000000018fb3c560 NSKeyValueDidChange + 388 14 Foundation 0x00000001903149a0 NSKeyValueDidChangeWithPerThreadPendingNotifications + 160 15 AppKit 0x00000001924673d4 -[NSThemeFrame _didChangeContentLayoutRect] + 76 16 AppKit 0x000000019246521c -[NSWindow _oldPlaceWindow:fromServer:] + 744 ) It seems like the system attempts to access a screen object that is already nil after the external monitor is removed. This leads to an assertion failure in UINSWorkspace. Is there any known workaround or update planned to address this issue? Thank you.

VisionOS custom hover effect and click sound
I have created a custom hover effect per this WWDC video and many other examples on the Net: https://aninterestingwebsite.com/videos/play/wwdc2024/10152/ I can get the button to expand when looked at within a VisionOS device and it will invoke a tap event when tapped but there is no click sound like a normal SwiftUI button does in VisionOS! I can't for the life of me figure out why. Any help would be appreciated!

Bundling OSX installer plugin with productbuild/pkgbuild
I'm trying to create a .pkg installer with productbuild/pkgbuild. But I'd also like to add my custom installer plugin to this. I'm using the following script. I'd like to add my bundle into this script. Since there are no official docs from apple how to do this nor there are a lot of updated resources, here are some things I have tried. adding the following line to Distrubtion.xml <bundle id="pluginid" path="path/to/myplugin.bundle"/> adding component tag to pkgbuild also doesn't do anything --component "path/to/myplugin.bundle" The bundle itself is build with XCode - it is a simple UI for user to type some input in Apple provides documentation for Distribution.xml file, which supports different UI elements but doesn't support text input - docs I have been also looking at this tutorial , it is very outdated but i could still fit it to my needs except the part where the .bundle file needs to be inserted into .pkg. Note - there is no option to view the contents of .pkg file build with pkbuild/productbuild How can i do this process correctly? I would like to link my installer pane plugin to a generic .pkg(with licenses and so on). I'd appreciate any kind of help!

CarPlay selection highlightning
It looks like I'm one of the rare developers dealing with CarPlay... I develop a CarPlay extension for my apps. A few things: especially when using the CarPlay I/O window in iOS Simulator, I get random selection highlightning for list items: I have three list templates in a tab template; once I reselect a list using the tab which has been selected before, the initial list item highlights / returns to normal every refresh of the list content; while this doesn't happen for my real world Sony CarPlay device, I'd rather not see such disturbing highlighting for my users. I do not update the template structs or items here, it is just content like text of detailText I update. Question: how to remove highlightning programmatically - especially for devices with touch screen? I have one user who reports auto-selection of UI elements while driving; I assume this is some problem with his touch screen, but it may be a general issue too. Question: anyone with similar observations connecting my iPhone to the stand-alone Car Play simulator doesn't work; I had it working before, so it might be related to a recent iOS beta... Any hints / observations are welcome. The CarPlay community really seems to be small and I'd like to hear other's experience on the named items.

How can I make a new item from within a navigationlink?
Sorry if this is too basic, but I really can't figure out how to make this work. I am trying to make a journal app and I want to have a button that creates a new journalentry and then loads it. This code snippet (I removed irrelevant bits) shows how I'm trying to go about it. Basically, the newEntryButtons should launch a JournalPromptRoute for one of the different options: that's the method argument. But putting .createNewEntry() inside the argument means that new entries are being constantly created. I want the system to create a new entry once on the button press and then go to it from the navigationDestination area. Can anyone please explain to me how this is supposed to work? I believe the code snippet is detailed enough to get the point across but please let me know if you need more info. case library case blank(entry: Entry) case mystery case summary(entry: Entry) case entry(entry: Entry) } struct JournalHome: View { @ObservedObject var viewModel: JournalViewModel var mainContent: some View { ScrollView { newEntryButtons LazyVStack { ForEach(filteredEntries) { entry in NavigationLink( value: JournalPromptRoute.entry(entry: entry) ) { JournalCard(entry) } } } } } var body: some View { NavigationStack(path: $path) { mainContent .navigationDestination(for: JournalPromptRoute.self) { route in switch route { case .blank(let entry): JournalEntryView( entry: entry, index: 0, viewModel: viewModel ) } } } } var newEntryButtons: some View { ScrollView(.horizontal) { HStack(spacing: 15) { EntryButton( description: "Add blank entry", method: JournalPromptRoute.blank(entry: viewModel.createNewEntry()), viewModel: viewModel, path: $path ) EntryButton( description: "Select a Journey", method: JournalPromptRoute.library, viewModel: viewModel, path: $path ) EntryButton( description: "Let the Journey find you", method: JournalPromptRoute.mystery, viewModel: viewModel, path: $path ) } } } }

ssue with Session Sharing Between Safari and ASWebAuthenticationSession
We are experiencing an issue with session sharing on iOS and would appreciate your guidance. We operate and control our own OpenID Connect (OIDC) server. Our iOS application uses ASWebAuthenticationSession to authenticate users. We're unable to get the authentication session to be shared between the Safari app and the app's ASWebAuthenticationSession. This results in users having to re-authenticate despite being logged in via Safari. We've attempted various configurations related to cookie SameSite settings. These adjustments resolved the session sharing issue on Android using Chrome Custom Tabs. However, no changes we've tried have enabled session sharing to work as expected on iOS. According to documentation from Apple, Microsoft, Okta, and Auth0, session sharing between Safari and ASWebAuthenticationSession should work. Question: Are there any additional settings, configurations, or platform limitations we should be aware of that could impact session sharing on iOS? Where else can we look to resolve this issue?

Scene.windowIdealSize(.fitToContent) seems not working
Hi everyone, Something didn't work in my environment so I wrote some demo code: import SwiftUI @main struct DemoApp: App { var body: some Scene { WindowGroup { Color.accentColor.opacity(1/4) .frame(idealWidth: 800, idealHeight: 800) } .windowIdealSize(.fitToContent) } } I expected a 800*800 window (then +28pt top) using .windowIdealSize(.fitToContent). Otherwise I can't control these views that use up available space such as Color, Spacer, GeometryReader, etc. Was I missing something? Or this is a problem or intended framework design? Environments: macOS 15.4.1 (24E263) and 15.5 beta 4 (24F5068b) Xcode 16.3 (16E140)

How remove AppIntent dialog programmatically?

A wrinkle converting a UIKit Document-based app to SwiftUI Document Group
The app I'm converting includes two unique document types. UI-wise they have key similarities (eg contents are password protected) But serialization/model - wise. they are different documents. I have not been able to find any documentation on options for implementing this (eg use a (abstract?) base class derived from FileDocument, with two concrete sub classes? maybe just a single subclass of FileDocument that contains model details for both file types?) Stepping back from implementation options, am I crazy for attempting to use DocumentGroup to create a single app that would need to be able to open/modify/save multiple unique document types? any/all guidance much appreciated.

GroupBox breaks ability of XCTest to find popovers?
I'm using Xcode 14.3.1 on macOS 13.5, and I've managed to reproduce my issue in a trivial application. All the project settings are left at the defaults for a macOS project. It looks like using a GroupBox breaks the ability of XCTest to find popovers connected to buttons (I suspect any UI element) inside the GroupBox. The debug console output from the code below lists 15 descendants from my window with the outside-the-GroupBox popover open, and one of them is definitely a popover. With the inside-the-GroupBox popover open, my window only shows nine descendants, and no popover (the rest of the difference is the popover's contents). It's simple enough I don't see what I could be doing wrong: import SwiftUI @main struct GroupBox_Popover_DemoApp: App { var body: some Scene { WindowGroup { ContentView() } } } struct ContentView: View { @State var outsidePopoverPresented: Bool = false @State var insidePopoverPresented: Bool = false var body: some View { VStack { Button("Outside GroupBox") { outsidePopoverPresented = true } .popover(isPresented: $outsidePopoverPresented, attachmentAnchor: .point(.leading), arrowEdge: .leading) { Popover(selected: .constant("Item A"), isPresented: $outsidePopoverPresented) } .padding() GroupBox { Button("Inside GroupBox") { insidePopoverPresented = true } .popover(isPresented: $insidePopoverPresented, attachmentAnchor: .point(.leading), arrowEdge: .leading) { Popover(selected: .constant("Item B"), isPresented: $insidePopoverPresented) } .padding() } } .padding() } } struct Popover: View { @Binding var selected: String @Binding var isPresented: Bool var body: some View { VStack(alignment: .leading) { Picker("", selection: $selected) { Text("Item A").tag("Item A") Text("Item B").tag("Item B") Text("Item C").tag("Item C") } .pickerStyle(.radioGroup) HStack { Spacer() Button("Cancel") { isPresented = false } } } .padding() .frame(width: 200) } } Then in my UI tests: import XCTest final class GroupBox_Popover_DemoUITests: XCTestCase { let mainWindow = XCUIApplication().windows override func setUpWithError() throws { continueAfterFailure = false XCUIApplication().launch() } func testPopovers() { let myDescendants = mainWindow.descendants(matching: .any) mainWindow.buttons["Outside GroupBox"].click() print("Window descendants with outside popover open:") print(myDescendants.debugDescription) mainWindow.popovers.buttons["Cancel"].click() mainWindow.buttons["Inside GroupBox"].click() print("Window descendants with inside popover open:") print(myDescendants.debugDescription) mainWindow.popovers.buttons["Cancel"].click() XCTAssert(true, "Test was able to hit cancel on both popovers.") } } Any ideas? Have I missed unchecking some "Ignore anything in a GroupBox" checkbox somewhere?

How to fix an extra whitespace at the top of UIAlertController action sheet on iPad?
Hello, I've been trying to figure this thing for a while now, but I've not able to find any resolution. I've a UIAlertController object presented as UIAlertControllerStyleActionSheet. It's fairly straightforward code: UIAlertController *listSheet = [UIAlertController alertControllerWithTitle:NSLocalizedStringFromTableInBundle(@"Please Select a Report", nil, [LDKLocalizationTool currentBundle], @"Chart report selector") message:nil preferredStyle:UIAlertControllerStyleActionSheet]; [self.charts enumerateObjectsUsingBlock:^(ChartDefinition *chart, NSUInteger idx, BOOL *stop) { UIAlertAction *anAction = [UIAlertAction actionWithTitle:chart.graphLabel style:UIAlertActionStyleDefault handler:^(UIAlertAction *action) { // handler logic }]; [listSheet addAction:anAction]; }]; // Set the anchor point for the AlertController UIPopoverPresentationController *popoverPresenter = [listSheet popoverPresentationController]; if (popoverPresenter) { popoverPresenter.sourceView = sender; popoverPresenter.sourceRect = [sender bounds]; } // Display the AlertController [self presentViewController:listSheet animated:YES completion:nil]; However, when presented, the action sheet shows up as shown in the attached screenshot. There are no autoLayout constraints or anything like that to cause issues with layout. I'm not sure why it's causing this issue. Any suggestions or help is much appreciated! iPadOS version: 18.4 Xcode version: 16.3 M4 Mac with macOS 15.5

Display a broader track of a user on ios app with Mapkit.
Hello I'm currently building a feature within an ios app using SwiftUI and Mapkit to record the gps cordinates of a user as they move and render the track on the map. the idea is not really to have a "track" but to have a visual representation of the area the user sees while they are moving around. I need this width/breadth to be relative to the map and not the screen, such that when I zoom in and out of the map, the size will adjust automatically.

NSTableView.clickedRow sometimes is greater than number of rows
Xcode has been downloading many similar crash reports for my app for some time now, related to an index out of range runtime exception when accessing a Swift array. The crashes always happen in methods triggered by user input or during menu item validation when I try to access the data source array by using the following code to determine the indexes of the relevant table rows: let indexes = clickedRow == -1 || selectedRowIndexes.contains(clickedRow) ? selectedRowIndexes : IndexSet(integer: clickedRow) I was never able to reproduce the crash until today. When the app crashed in the Xcode debugger, I examined the variables clickedRow and selectedRowIndexes.first, which were 1 and 0 respectively. What's interesting: the table view only contained one row, so clickedRow was effectively invalid. I tried to reproduce the issue several times afterwards, but it never happened again. What could cause this issue? What are the circumstances where it is invalid? Do I always have to explicitly check if clickedRow is within the data source range?

How do I size a UITextView with scroll disabled?
tl;dr: UITextView does not auto layout when isScrollEnabled = false I have a screen with multiple UITextViews on it, contained within a ScrollView. For each textview, I calculate the height needed to display the entire content in SwiftUI and set it using the .frame(width:height:) modifier. The UITextView will respect the size passed in and layout within the container, but since UITextView is embedded within a UIScrollView, when a user attempts to scroll on the page, often they will scroll within a UITextView block rather than the page. They currently need to scroll along the margins outside of the textview to get the proper behavior. Since I am already calculating the height to display the text, I don't want the UITextView to scroll. However, when I set isScrollEnabled = false, the text view displays in a single long line that gets truncated. I have tried Setting various frame/size attributes but that seems to have zero affect on the layout. Embedding the textView within a UIView, and then sizing the container, but then the textView does not display at all. Setting a fixed size textContainer in the layoutManager but did not work. There's a lot of code so I can't copy/paste it all, but generally, it looks like struct SwiftUITextEditor: View { @State var text: AttributedString = "" var body: some View { ZStack { MyTextViewRepresentable(text: $text) } .dynamicallySized(from: $text) } } struct MyTextViewRepresentable: UIViewRepresentable { @Binding var text: AttributedString let textView = UITextView(usingTextLayoutManager: true) func makeUIView(context: Context) -> UITextView { textView.attributedText = text textView.isScrollEnabled = false } ... }

tvOS Remote Control Entitlements

Sorry if this is too basic, but I really can't figure out how to make this work. I am trying to make a journal app and I want to have a button that creates a new journalentry and then loads it. This code snippet (I removed irrelevant bits) shows how I'm trying to go about it. Basically, the newEntryButtons should launch a JournalPromptRoute for one of the different options: that's the method argument. But putting .createNewEntry() inside the argument means that new entries are being constantly created. I want the system to create a new entry once on the button press and then go to it from the navigationDestination area. Can anyone please explain to me how this is supposed to work? I believe the code snippet is detailed enough to get the point across but please let me know if you need more info. case library case blank(entry: Entry) case mystery case summary(entry: Entry) case entry(entry: Entry) } struct JournalHome: View { @ObservedObject var viewModel: JournalViewModel var mainContent: some View { ScrollView { newEntryButtons LazyVStack { ForEach(filteredEntries) { entry in NavigationLink( value: JournalPromptRoute.entry(entry: entry) ) { JournalCard(entry) } } } } } var body: some View { NavigationStack(path: $path) { mainContent .navigationDestination(for: JournalPromptRoute.self) { route in switch route { case .blank(let entry): JournalEntryView( entry: entry, index: 0, viewModel: viewModel ) } } } } var newEntryButtons: some View { ScrollView(.horizontal) { HStack(spacing: 15) { EntryButton( description: "Add blank entry", method: JournalPromptRoute.blank(entry: viewModel.createNewEntry()), viewModel: viewModel, path: $path ) EntryButton( description: "Select a Journey", method: JournalPromptRoute.library, viewModel: viewModel, path: $path ) EntryButton( description: "Let the Journey find you", method: JournalPromptRoute.mystery, viewModel: viewModel, path: $path ) } } } }

ssue with Session Sharing Between Safari and ASWebAuthenticationSession

When the perform method of my AppIntent returns the custom view's dialog, and after I click the "Click Test" button, my app will be launched, but this dialog does not close. How can I close it? struct QuestionResultView: View { var body: some View { VStack { if #available(iOS 17.0, *) { Button(role:.cancel, intent: OpenAppIntent()) { Text("Click Test") } } }.frame(height: 300) } } struct OpenAppIntent : AppIntent { static let title: LocalizedStringResource = "Open my app" static let openAppWhenRun: Bool = true static let isDiscoverable: Bool = false; @MainActor func perform() async throws -> some IntentResult { return .result() } } struct OpenPhotoRecognizing: AppIntent { static let title: LocalizedStringResource = "Read photo" static let description = IntentDescription("") static let openAppWhenRun: Bool = false func perform() async throws -> some IntentResult & ShowsSnippetView & ProvidesDialog{ return .result(dialog: "Demo Test") { DemoResultView() } } }

Requesting user Permission for Speech Framework crashes visionOS simulator
When a new application runs on VisionOS 2.4 simulator and tries to access the Speech Framework, prompting a request for authorisation to use Speech Recognition, the application freezes.
