occasional glitches and empty buffers when using AudioFileStream + AVAudioConverter
I'm streaming mp3 audio data using URLSession/AudioFileStream/AVAudioConverter and getting occasional silent buffers and glitches (little bleeps and whoops as opposed to clicks). The issues are present in an offline test, so this isn't an issue of underruns. Audio / Video sync issue on iOS using AVSampleBufferRenderSynchronizer
My current app implements a custom video player, based on a AVSampleBufferRenderSynchronizer synchronising two renderers: an AVSampleBufferDisplayLayer receiving decoded CVPixelBuffer-based video CMSampleBuffers, and an AVSampleBufferAudioRenderer receiving decoded lpcm-based audio CMSampleBuffers. The AVSampleBufferRenderSynchronizer is started when the first image (in presentation order) is decoded and enqueued, using avSynchronizer.setRate(_ rate: Float, time: CMTime), with rate = 1 and time the presentation timestamp of the first decoded image. Presentation timestamps of video and audio sample buffers are consistent, and on most streams, the audio and video are correctly synchronized. However on some network streams, on iOS, the audio and video aren't synchronized, with a time difference that seems to increase with time. On the other hand, with the same player code and network streams on macOS, the synchronization always works fine. This reminds me of something I've read, about cases where an AVSampleBufferRenderSynchronizer could not synchronize audio and video, causing them to run with independent and potentially drifting clocks, but I cannot find it again. So, any help / hints on this sync problem will be greatly appreciated! :)

Issue with Audio Sample Rate Conversion in Video Calls
Hey everyone, I'm encountering an issue with audio sample rate conversion that I'm hoping someone can help with. Here's the breakdown: Issue Description: I've installed a tap on an input device to convert audio to an optimal sample rate. There's a converter node added on top of this setup. The problem arises when joining Zoom or FaceTime calls—the converter gets deallocated from memory, causing the program to crash. Symptoms: The converter node is being deallocated during video calls. The program crashes entirely when this happens. Traditional methods of monitoring sample rate changes (tracking nominal or actual sample rates) aren't working as expected. The Big Challenge: I can't figure out how to properly monitor sample rate changes. Listeners set up to track these changes don't trigger when the device joins a Zoom or FaceTime call. Please, if anyone has experience with this or knows a solution, I'd really appreciate your help. Thanks in advance! ⁠

HDR video & screen brightness
When I play an HDR video in the iPhone Photos app, I can see the HDR effect obviously. But if this HDR video is played continuously for more than 30-40 minutes, the HDR effect will disappear and the brightness will be compressed to the SDR range. This issue will appear on any iPhone. Depending on the phone, it may be 20-30 minutes, or 30-40 minutes, or even a few minutes, such as iPhone 12 mini. Similarly, if I use AVPlayer to play and preview an HDR video, if it plays more than 30-40 minutes, the HDR effect will disappear and the screen brightness will dim. Also the currentEDRHeadroom will gradually decrease to 1 Note, test it with an HDR video longer than 1 hour, and if the video is short, please loop it. My question is how to avoid losing the HDR effect after 30-40 minutes when I use CAMetalLayer to render any HDR video.

App Randomly Crashes During Continuous Sound Playback Using AVAudioPlayer
Environment→ ・Device: iPad 10th generation ・OS:**iOS18.3.2 We're using AVAudioPlayer to play a sound when a button is tapped. In our use case, this button can be tapped very frequently — roughly every 0.1 to 0.2 seconds. Interestingly, adding a delay of 0.2 seconds between button taps seems to prevent the crash entirely. Delays shorter than 0.2 seconds (e.g.,0.15s,0.18s) still result in occasional crashes. My questions are: **Is this expected behavior from AVAudioPlayer or AVAudioSession? Could this be a known issue or a limitation in AVFoundation? Is there any documentation or guidance on handling frequent sound playback safely?** Any insights or recommendations on how to handle rapid, repeated audio playback more reliably would be appreciated.

Play Audio and Recognize Speech in Car
Hello, I'm trying to determine the best/recommended AVAudioSession configuration (i.e category, mode, and options) for the following use-case. Essentially, I'd like to switch between periods of playing an audio file and then recognizing speech. The audio file is typically speech and I don't intend for playback and speech recognition to occur simultaneously. I'd like for the user to sill be able to interact with Siri and I'd like for it to work with CarPlay where navigation prompts can occur. I would assume the category to use is 'playAndRecord', but I'm not sure if it's better to just set that once for the entire lifecycle, or set to 'playback' for audio file playback and then switch to 'playAndRecord' for speech recognition . I'm also not sure on the best 'mode' and 'options' to set. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Telephoto Lens Keeps Switching to Other Lenses on iPhone 16 Pro Max During PPG (Finger on Camera)
Hi, I’m building a PPG-based heart rate feature where the user places their finger over the rear telephoto camera. Image brightness adapts despite exposure lock
Short summary When setting exposureMode to .locked or .custom the brightness of a video stream still changes depending on the composition and contrast of the visible scene. These changes seem to come from contrast enhancements or dynamic range optimizations and totally break any analysis of the image that requires to assess absolute luminance. While exposure lock seems to indeed lock the physical exposure parameters of the camera (shutter speed and ISO), I cannot find any way to control these "soft" modifiers. Details Background I am the developer of the app "phyphox", an educational app that makes the phone's sensors accessible to students as measurement tools in science experiments. Currently I am working on implementing photometric measurements through the camera and one very important aspect of it is luminance measurements. This is particularly relevant since the light sensor of the phone has no publicly accessible API and the camera could to some extend make experiments available to Apple users that are otherwise only possible on Android devices. Implementation The app uses AVFoundation and explicitly picks individual cameras since camera groups do not support custom exposure settings. This means that it handles camera switching during zoom by itself and even implements its own auto exposure routines to optimize for the use in experiments. Therefore it always stays in custom exposure mode. The app uses YUV420 color space and the individual frames are analyzed in Metal using compute shaders. However, the effects discussed here still occur if I remove all code to control the camera and replace it with a simple sequence of setting the exposure mode to custom, setting custom exposure values, setting a fixed white balance and then setting the exposure mode to locked as suggested on stackoverflow. This neither helps on an iPhone 14 Pro nor on an iPhone 8 despite a report on the developer forums that it would resolve the issue for older devices. The app is open source, so the code can be seen in our current development branch (without the changes for the tests here, though) on github. The videos below use the implementation with the suggestion from stackoverflow, but they can be reproduced in the same way with "professional" camera apps that promise manual control over the camera (like the Blackmagic cam to quote a reputable company) as well as the stock camera app after pressing and holding on the preview to enable AE/AF lock. Demonstration These examples were captured on an iPhone 14 Pro. The central part of the image (highlighted by the app using metal shaders after capture) should not change with fixed exposure settings, but significant changes are noticable if there are changes at the edge of the frame when I move a black piece of cardboard in from above: https://share.icloud.com/photos/0b1f_3IB6yAQG-qSH27pm6oDQ The graph above the camera preview is the average luminance (gamma corrected and weighted based on sRGB) across the highlighted central area and as mentioned before it should not change because of something happening at the side of the frame (worst case it should get a bit darker because of the cardboard's shadow). In my opinion, the iPhone changes its mind on the ideal contrast as soon as it has a different exposure histogram because of the dark image part from the cardboard, but that's just me guessing. The brightness of the gray area does not change immediately but transitions smoothly, so this is clearly deliberate postprocessing. So... Any suggestion on how to prevent this behavior would be highly appreciated.

Save slow motion video with custom playback speed bar
Background: For iOS, I have built a custom video record app that records video at the highest possible FPS (supposed to be around 240 FPS but more like ~200 in practice). When I save this video to the user's camera roll, I notice this dynamic playback speed bar. This bar will speed up or slow down the video. My question: How can I save my video such that this playback speed bar is constantly slow or plays at real time speed? For reference I have include the playback speed bar that I am talking about in the screenshot, you can find this in the photo app when you record slow motion video.

Issue with Airplay for DRM videos
When I try to send a DRM-protected video via Airplay to an Apple TV, the license request is made twice instead of once as it normally does on iOS. We only allow one request per session for security reasons, this causes the second request to fail and the video won't play. We've tested DRM-protected videos without token usage limits and it works, but this creates a security hole in our system. Why does it request the license twice in function: func contentKeySession(_ session: AVContentKeySession, didProvide keyRequest: AVContentKeyRequest)? Is there a way to prevent this?

Live HLS Stream Not Playing After Window Resize in Vision Pro
Hi everyone, I'm developing a visionOS app for Apple Vision Pro, and I've encountered an issue related to window resizing at runtime when using AVPlayer to play a live HLS stream. ✅ What I'm Trying to Do Play a live HLS stream (from Wowza) inside my app using AVPlayer. Support resizing the immersive window using Vision Pro’s built-in runtime scaling gesture. Stream works fine at default window size when the app launches. ❌ Problem If I resize the app’s window at runtime (using the Vision Pro pinch-drag gesture), then try to start the stream, it does not play. Instead, it just shows the "Loading live stream..." state and never proceeds to playback. This issue only occurs after resizing the window — if I don’t resize, the stream works perfectly every time. 🧪 What I’ve Tried Verified the HLS URL — it’s working and plays fine in Safari and in the app before resizing. Set .automaticallyWaitsToMinimizeStalling = false on AVPlayer. Observed that .status on AVPlayerItem never reaches .readyToPlay after resizing. Tried to force window size back using UIWindowScene.requestGeometryUpdate(...), but behavior persists.

Accessory not supported by this device
Hi, I've had a new deck installed in my car for about 1.5 weeks. I'm having compatibility issues with my 15PM. It happens both wired and wirelessly, I get the error "Accessory not supported by this device". It used to happen all the time, now it's 50/50. Sometimes it works. I've removed and added Bluetooth multiple times on phone and deck, I bought a belkin usb-c to usb-a cable today and it seems to fix it but the problem comes back. I've changed the setting "FaceID and passcode-allow access when locked-accessories." The car stereo guy reckons it's definitely an issue with the phone not the deck, I'm inclined to believe him since the error states "by this device". Any advice appreciated.

After playing an HDR video on iPhone for a while, the HDR effect disappears and the screen brightness decrease
When i use AVPlayer to obtain the video frame CVPixelBufferRef of an HDR video, and use AVSampleBufferDisplayLayer to display it on the screen, after a period of time, the HDR video content and screen gradually darken, losing the HDR effect. How to Keep Camera Running in iOS PiP Mode (Like WhatsApp/Google Meet)?
I'm using Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode in my native iOS application, which is similar to Google Meet, using the VideoSDK.live Native iOS SDK. The SDK has built-in support for PiP and it's working fine for the most part. However, I'm running into a problem: When the app enters PiP mode, the local camera (self-video) of the participant freezes or stops. I want to fix this and achieve the same smooth behavior seen in apps like Google Meet and WhatsApp, where the local camera keeps working even in PiP mode. I've been trying to find documentation or examples on how to achieve this but haven't had much luck. I came across a few mentions that using the camera in the background may require special entitlements from Apple (like in the entitlements file). Most of the official documentation says background camera access is restricted due to Apple’s privacy policies. So my questions are: Has anyone here successfully implemented background camera access in PiP mode on iOS? If yes, what permissions or entitlements are required? How do apps like WhatsApp and Google Meet achieve this functionality on iPhones? Any help, advice, or pointers would be really appreciated!

storing AVAsset in SwiftData
Hi, I am creating an app that can include videos or images in it's data. While @Attribute(.externalStorage) helps with images, with AVAssets I actually would like access to the URL behind that data. (as it would be stupid to load and then save the data again just to have a URL) One key component is to keep all of this clean enough so that I can use (private) CloudKit syncing with the resulting model. occasional glitches and empty buffers when using AudioFileStream + AVAudioConverter
I'm streaming mp3 audio data using URLSession/AudioFileStream/AVAudioConverter and getting occasional silent buffers and glitches (little bleeps and whoops as opposed to clicks). The issues are present in an offline test, so this isn't an issue of underruns. Audio / Video sync issue on iOS using AVSampleBufferRenderSynchronizer
My current app implements a custom video player, based on a AVSampleBufferRenderSynchronizer synchronising two renderers: an AVSampleBufferDisplayLayer receiving decoded CVPixelBuffer-based video CMSampleBuffers, and an AVSampleBufferAudioRenderer receiving decoded lpcm-based audio CMSampleBuffers. The AVSampleBufferRenderSynchronizer is started when the first image (in presentation order) is decoded and enqueued, using avSynchronizer.setRate(_ rate: Float, time: CMTime), with rate = 1 and time the presentation timestamp of the first decoded image. Presentation timestamps of video and audio sample buffers are consistent, and on most streams, the audio and video are correctly synchronized. However on some network streams, on iOS, the audio and video aren't synchronized, with a time difference that seems to increase with time. On the other hand, with the same player code and network streams on macOS, the synchronization always works fine. This reminds me of something I've read, about cases where an AVSampleBufferRenderSynchronizer could not synchronize audio and video, causing them to run with independent and potentially drifting clocks, but I cannot find it again. So, any help / hints on this sync problem will be greatly appreciated! :)

Issue with Audio Sample Rate Conversion in Video Calls
Hey everyone, I'm encountering an issue with audio sample rate conversion that I'm hoping someone can help with. Here's the breakdown: Issue Description: I've installed a tap on an input device to convert audio to an optimal sample rate. There's a converter node added on top of this setup. The problem arises when joining Zoom or FaceTime calls—the converter gets deallocated from memory, causing the program to crash. Symptoms: The converter node is being deallocated during video calls. The program crashes entirely when this happens. Traditional methods of monitoring sample rate changes (tracking nominal or actual sample rates) aren't working as expected. The Big Challenge: I can't figure out how to properly monitor sample rate changes. Listeners set up to track these changes don't trigger when the device joins a Zoom or FaceTime call. Please, if anyone has experience with this or knows a solution, I'd really appreciate your help. Thanks in advance! ⁠

HDR video & screen brightness
When I play an HDR video in the iPhone Photos app, I can see the HDR effect obviously. But if this HDR video is played continuously for more than 30-40 minutes, the HDR effect will disappear and the brightness will be compressed to the SDR range. This issue will appear on any iPhone. Depending on the phone, it may be 20-30 minutes, or 30-40 minutes, or even a few minutes, such as iPhone 12 mini. Similarly, if I use AVPlayer to play and preview an HDR video, if it plays more than 30-40 minutes, the HDR effect will disappear and the screen brightness will dim. Also the currentEDRHeadroom will gradually decrease to 1 Note, test it with an HDR video longer than 1 hour, and if the video is short, please loop it. My question is how to avoid losing the HDR effect after 30-40 minutes when I use CAMetalLayer to render any HDR video.

Pip custom view in Xcode16, iOS18, does not display when the camera is turned on
I have added some custom views on my pip. These controls disappeared after opening the camera in the Xcode16 environment and iOS 18 system, and it was found that these custom views were not removed and seemed to be obscured. App Randomly Crashes During Continuous Sound Playback Using AVAudioPlayer

In our use case, this button can be tapped very frequently — roughly every 0.1 to 0.2 seconds. Interestingly, adding a delay of 0.2 seconds between button taps seems to prevent the crash entirely. Delays shorter than 0.2 seconds (e.g.,0.15s,0.18s) still result in occasional crashes. My questions are: **Is this expected behavior from AVAudioPlayer or AVAudioSession? Could this be a known issue or a limitation in AVFoundation? Is there any documentation or guidance on handling frequent sound playback safely?** Any insights or recommendations on how to handle rapid, repeated audio playback more reliably would be appreciated.

Play Audio and Recognize Speech in Car
Hello, I'm trying to determine the best/recommended AVAudioSession configuration (i.e category, mode, and options) for the following use-case. Essentially, I'd like to switch between periods of playing an audio file and then recognizing speech. The audio file is typically speech and I don't intend for playback and speech recognition to occur simultaneously. I'd like for the user to sill be able to interact with Siri and I'd like for it to work with CarPlay where navigation prompts can occur. I would assume the category to use is 'playAndRecord', but I'm not sure if it's better to just set that once for the entire lifecycle, or set to 'playback' for audio file playback and then switch to 'playAndRecord' for speech recognition . I'm also not sure on the best 'mode' and 'options' to set. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Telephoto Lens Keeps Switching to Other Lenses on iPhone 16 Pro Max During PPG (Finger on Camera)
Hi, I’m building a PPG-based heart rate feature where the user places their finger over the rear telephoto camera. Image brightness adapts despite exposure lock
Short summary When setting exposureMode to .locked or .custom the brightness of a video stream still changes depending on the composition and contrast of the visible scene. These changes seem to come from contrast enhancements or dynamic range optimizations and totally break any analysis of the image that requires to assess absolute luminance. While exposure lock seems to indeed lock the physical exposure parameters of the camera (shutter speed and ISO), I cannot find any way to control these "soft" modifiers. Details Background I am the developer of the app "phyphox", an educational app that makes the phone's sensors accessible to students as measurement tools in science experiments. Currently I am working on implementing photometric measurements through the camera and one very important aspect of it is luminance measurements. This is particularly relevant since the light sensor of the phone has no publicly accessible API and the camera could to some extend make experiments available to Apple users that are otherwise only possible on Android devices. Implementation The app uses AVFoundation and explicitly picks individual cameras since camera groups do not support custom exposure settings. This means that it handles camera switching during zoom by itself and even implements its own auto exposure routines to optimize for the use in experiments. Therefore it always stays in custom exposure mode. The app uses YUV420 color space and the individual frames are analyzed in Metal using compute shaders. However, the effects discussed here still occur if I remove all code to control the camera and replace it with a simple sequence of setting the exposure mode to custom, setting custom exposure values, setting a fixed white balance and then setting the exposure mode to locked as suggested on stackoverflow. This neither helps on an iPhone 14 Pro nor on an iPhone 8 despite a report on the developer forums that it would resolve the issue for older devices. The app is open source, so the code can be seen in our current development branch (without the changes for the tests here, though) on github. The videos below use the implementation with the suggestion from stackoverflow, but they can be reproduced in the same way with "professional" camera apps that promise manual control over the camera (like the Blackmagic cam to quote a reputable company) as well as the stock camera app after pressing and holding on the preview to enable AE/AF lock. Demonstration These examples were captured on an iPhone 14 Pro. The central part of the image (highlighted by the app using metal shaders after capture) should not change with fixed exposure settings, but significant changes are noticable if there are changes at the edge of the frame when I move a black piece of cardboard in from above: https://share.icloud.com/photos/0b1f_3IB6yAQG-qSH27pm6oDQ The graph above the camera preview is the average luminance (gamma corrected and weighted based on sRGB) across the highlighted central area and as mentioned before it should not change because of something happening at the side of the frame (worst case it should get a bit darker because of the cardboard's shadow). In my opinion, the iPhone changes its mind on the ideal contrast as soon as it has a different exposure histogram because of the dark image part from the cardboard, but that's just me guessing. The brightness of the gray area does not change immediately but transitions smoothly, so this is clearly deliberate postprocessing. So... Save slow motion video with custom playback speed bar
Background: For iOS, I have built a custom video record app that records video at the highest possible FPS (supposed to be around 240 FPS but more like ~200 in practice). When I save this video to the user's camera roll, I notice this dynamic playback speed bar. This bar will speed up or slow down the video. My question: How can I save my video such that this playback speed bar is constantly slow or plays at real time speed? How to update of live blogs in Apple News automatically?
I am working to update a live blog in Apple News. As far as I know there is an update endpoint to update a content in Apple News. Is there any feature in Apple News to trigger an event when the original content updated and pull the updated content?

Issue with Airplay for DRM videos
When I try to send a DRM-protected video via Airplay to an Apple TV, the license request is made twice instead of once as it normally does on iOS. We only allow one request per session for security reasons, this causes the second request to fail and the video won't play. We've tested DRM-protected videos without token usage limits and it works, but this creates a security hole in our system. Why does it request the license twice in function: func contentKeySession(_ session: AVContentKeySession, didProvide keyRequest: AVContentKeyRequest)? Is there a way to prevent this?

Live HLS Stream Not Playing After Window Resize in Vision Pro
Hi everyone, I'm developing a visionOS app for Apple Vision Pro, and I've encountered an issue related to window resizing at runtime when using AVPlayer to play a live HLS stream. ✅ What I'm Trying to Do Play a live HLS stream (from Wowza) inside my app using AVPlayer. Support resizing the immersive window using Vision Pro’s built-in runtime scaling gesture. Stream works fine at default window size when the app launches. ❌ Problem If I resize the app’s window at runtime (using the Vision Pro pinch-drag gesture), then try to start the stream, it does not play. Instead, it just shows the "Loading live stream..." state and never proceeds to playback. This issue only occurs after resizing the window — if I don’t resize, the stream works perfectly every time. 🧪 What I’ve Tried Verified the HLS URL — it’s working and plays fine in Safari and in the app before resizing. Set .automaticallyWaitsToMinimizeStalling = false on AVPlayer. Observed that .status on AVPlayerItem never reaches .readyToPlay after resizing. Tried to force window size back using UIWindowScene.requestGeometryUpdate(...), but behavior persists.

Accessory not supported by this device
Hi, I've had a new deck installed in my car for about 1.5 weeks. I'm having compatibility issues with my 15PM. It happens both wired and wirelessly, I get the error "Accessory not supported by this device". It used to happen all the time, now it's 50/50. Sometimes it works. I've removed and added Bluetooth multiple times on phone and deck, I bought a belkin usb-c to usb-a cable today and it seems to fix it but the problem comes back. I've changed the setting "FaceID and passcode-allow access when locked-accessories." The car stereo guy reckons it's definitely an issue with the phone not the deck, I'm inclined to believe him since the error states "by this device". Any advice appreciated.

How to Keep Camera Running in iOS PiP Mode (Like WhatsApp/Google Meet)?
I'm using Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode in my native iOS application, which is similar to Google Meet, using the VideoSDK.live Native iOS SDK. The SDK has built-in support for PiP and it's working fine for the most part. However, I'm running into a problem: When the app enters PiP mode, the local camera (self-video) of the participant freezes or stops. I want to fix this and achieve the same smooth behavior seen in apps like Google Meet and WhatsApp, where the local camera keeps working even in PiP mode. I've been trying to find documentation or examples on how to achieve this but haven't had much luck. I came across a few mentions that using the camera in the background may require special entitlements from Apple (like in the entitlements file). Most of the official documentation says background camera access is restricted due to Apple’s privacy policies. So my questions are: Has anyone here successfully implemented background camera access in PiP mode on iOS? If yes, what permissions or entitlements are required? How do apps like WhatsApp and Google Meet achieve this functionality on iPhones? Any help, advice, or pointers would be really appreciated!

storing AVAsset in SwiftData
Hi, I am creating an app that can include videos or images in it's data. While @Attribute(.externalStorage) helps with images, with AVAssets I actually would like access to the URL behind that data. (as it would be stupid to load and then save the data again just to have a URL) One key component is to keep all of this clean enough so that I can use (private) CloudKit syncing with the resulting model.
